It is a long-standing staple for those who are serious about home defense and shares an equal-sized crowd with fearful or uncertain onlookers. They are loud, pushy and big. These three characteristics have prevented more people from purchasing this classic weapon to defend their castle. The shotgun can be used for home defense if you are able to choose the right gun and learn how to use it. The most important reason is stopping power. Although this term is often used, it is actually meaningful when used with a shotgun. Shotgun ammunition can be used to stop a shotgun bullet from striking a target. A round must penetrate a target at least 12 inches to be considered a stopper. This is the F.B.I’s general standard. A shotgun can fire 16 pellets at high speed into an intruder using #1 buckshot. These pellets have a combined surface area of 1.13 inches. This is equivalent to shooting someone 12-15 times simultaneously with.32 ACP and.380 ACP rounds. It is a true fight stopper. Shotguns are an excellent choice for home defense because of their simplicity. A shooter can quickly and easily bring a shotgun into a home to take out an intruder. Even simple training is possible. It is easier to aim and keep the gun on target with a long gun than a handgun. With some modifications, the shotgun can be an effective weapon in close quarters. There are several things you should consider when buying a home defense gun. There are many things to think about, but here are some of my top recommendations. These few points will help you find the shotgun that suits your needs the best, and not break the bank. Operation and Gauge Pump, or gas gun? Semi-auto and pump-action are the two main types of shotguns. They are also known as “gas guns” because they use a gas blowback mechanism. You should look for reliable guns when choosing between the two. Because the action is manual, the pump-action shotgun is much more reliable than the other systems. Gas guns can experience cycling problems if they are not properly lubricated, have low loads, or if the shooter doesn’t hold the gun sufficiently. You can overcome this problem by getting a good semi-auto gun that is well-made and learning how to use it. The pump-action wins this category out of the box. Second on the list is caliber. There are many calibers or “gauges” in shotguns. Although 12 gauge is the most popular, it is not a requirement. Two things will determine the shotgun’s gauge. What purpose does the gun serve and what can you do with it? I prefer to direct people to 20 gauge or 12 gauge. For most people, either of these rounds will work. These rounds are easily available at any gun shop or sporting goods store. They come in a variety flavors, from defensive loads to birdshot–which can be useful for training–to birdshot–which can be used as a training tool. Aiming System Last, but not least, you need to think about the aiming system. Contrary to Hollywood’s belief, you must aim your shotgun correctly to hit your target. There are many options, but it all comes down to personal preference. A bead sight is the most popular sighting system. This is a BB-shaped object that is placed at the barrel’s end and used to guide the front of your gun. It has been around for a long time, but I believe there are better options. First, a real rifle sight setup. This would include a front sight with a blade and a rear sight with a notched design. These sights are easy to use and increase accuracy. The next is a ghost-ring-style sight. This is a blade-style sight with an aperture sight in the back. This is my favorite iron sight option because it is easy to use and fast. An actual optic is the last option, and it is the most precise. Optics have made it possible to manage the shock and recoil of a shotgun with ease thanks to advances in optics. These are all important in ensuring that the shot you fire downrange hits the target. Professional Training is a must when you are considering using a shotgun to defend your home. Once you have that training, you can start to improve your skills at home. These are just a few of the solid tips that you should be looking at. First, don’t “go hunting” inside your home unless absolutely necessary. If you hear any noises, grab your weapon and position yourself to take aim at the doorway. Call 911 to get help. You can place the shotgun on the mattress if possible. This will make it easier to aim and reduce fatigue as the police approach you. If you have to move through your home, ensure that you clear all corners before you go. For searching in low light, it is important to use light sparingly. You must be able confirm your target. Third, when you are out and about, keep your weapon close to your body. You have a better chance of retention if an intruder catches you by surprise and grabs your gun. You could easily be disarmed if the gun is too far from your center. Parting shots The shotgun is a classic weapon, but it still plays a vital role today. The shotgun can be used as a home defense tool if you make the right selections. The scattergun can be your 12-gauge insurance policy if it is well-equipped and trained.
