It was a great trigger, with night sights, and at a very affordable price. Other manufacturers noticed. Springfield Armory’s Hellcat was introduced the following year. It was described at the time as the smallest microcompact 9mm with highest capacity. It could hold 11+1 rounds with the flush-fit magazine, and 13 +1 with the extended magazine. The new Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro takes it to the next level. RELATED STORY Springfield Armory Elite 3.8’’ Compact OSP Updated with.45 ACP Springfield Armory Hellcat PRO Details The Hellcat is very easy to carry, very precise, and has flawless reliability. It quickly became my everyday gun. The Hellcat is one of the few lightweight micro-compacts that can carry hot defense loads. Springfield Armory realized this and decided that not all customers need a micro-compact. The new Hellcat Pro has all the benefits of the original Hellcat, but with a longer barrel, a longer grip frame, and greater capacity. The Hellcat Pro offers shooters a more manageable defense pistol with a flush-fit magazine of 15+1. The longer slide and its larger mass make it easier to take out muzzle flip. This is combined with the longer grip frame that makes shooting hotter defense loads easier. Springfield Armory equips the Hellcat Pro’s barrel with a length that is.70 inches longer than the original Hellcat. In my testing, I found that the barrel length was responsible for a 3-7% increase of velocity. It is enough to make a significant difference in projectile expansion. It won’t make a difference in projectile expansion, but it doesn’t hurt. The longer slide increases the sight radius and allows for more accurate shooting. The Hellcat Pro comes with an optics plate. Springfield sent my evaluation pistol and test gun with their Hex Optics Wasp red dots already mounted. The optic is powered by a CR2032 battery and has a two-year run time. There is no on/off switch. The optic has a 3.5 MOA dot and its brightness adjusts to ambient lighting. Shooting the Hellcat Pro. I arrived in Sonoita Arizona at sunrise on a cold February morning. Two days prior to my arrival, there was still snow on the ground. When I set up my portable shooting bench and chronograph, the car thermometer read 17 degrees. I started the car and warmed up my hands between groups. I fired all groups from a seated position with the Hellcat Pro’s accessoryrail resting on a Millett BenchMaster. Hornady’s American Gunner, 124-grain XTP+P loads produced the best 5-shot group at 15 yards measuring only.88″. It also delivered the most energy with 366 Foot Pounds Energy. Only 1.16 was the largest Hellcat Pro group. If the weather was better, I think all these rounds could have produced sub-1-inch groups. Springfield Armory provides the Hellcat Pro with a Gen 3 trigger. My test samples broke with 5.5 pounds pressure. The trigger of the Hellcat Pro is crisp and has a firm reset. It’s perfect for a defense gun. Some people don’t need a small gun. A gun that fits comfortably in your hand and has a good sight radius makes it easier to hit targets. It’s the hits that matter!
