Paul Phillips optimizes the.416 Barrett for Big Bore Brilliance

March 11, 2022Big Bore brilliance — Paul Phillips Optimizes a.416 BarrettPaul Phillips was a former King of 2 Miles and is one of the top Extreme Long Range (ELR), shooters in the world. Phillips recently displayed an ELR rifle that shoots the.416 Barrett cartridge. It has huge, 550gr Cutting Edge cartridges that are seated in CNC-machined RCC brass that costs $10 per box. This rifle is a great example of Phillips’s exceptional accuracy. He recently tested his rifle at a snowy range. This article includes some test results. Paul’s rig delivered 1.056? To 1.748? 3-shot groups at 500 meters. This is a.202 to 0.335 MOA for three shots. (1 MOA = 1.047 at 100 yards, or 5.235? at 500 yards). This is a remarkable accuracy for a large cartridge with significant recoil.
After retiring from 30 years of military and law enforcement service, I founded Global Precision Group LLC. We are experts in long range shooting. I am currently working in R&D for Ultimate Ammunition (UA), a new ammunition company based out of Las Vegas. UA specializes on Military, Law Enforcement, Custom ammunition.

It was a very cold 15 degrees F on this particular day. I was testing ammunition to the.416 Barrett. My team has been trying to improve everything since winning the King of 2 Miles in 2019. It is fiercely competitive and everyone is improving. It is essential to find single-digit Standard Deviations. It is possible to win by keeping SDs below 5 FPS. After many weeks of testing, I believe I have found the right combination for the.416 Barrett in the rifle. My optimal load runs about 3000 FPS using the following components:Cutting Edge 550 Grain Solid Bullets with TipsRCC Brass (CNC-machined)Vihtavuori 20N29 PowderRWS primers Loaded for ~3000 FPS load velocity goalI figure if I can keep my 3-round groups under two inches consistently, I have a chance to win on any Sunday. These groups averaged 1.47 inches at 500 meters. It can be very expensive to test big bore rifles. This is why I limit my test groups to three rounds. Below:

The LabRadar recorded a single-digit Extreme Spread (SD) for all three-shot groups. (See below). These three groups were at 500 yards on average, and the SD was around three.
