We reported recently that the Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S. requested that U.S. firearms industry send ammunition and firearms aid. American firearm manufacturer KelTec responds to that request and provides the necessary assistance for Ukraine. As the Ukrainian people face increasing war, KelTec is faced with a strangely related problem. KelTec received $200,000 from a long-standing Ukrainian customer. This was after the Russian invasion. The family-owned company chose to give back and help others. According to the Associated Press, “Fearing what the worst might happen, Adrian Kellgren and KelTec decided to send those 400 guns to Ukraine’s nascent resistance group to help civilians fight back against a Russian army that has been repeatedly bombing their apartments, schools, hospitals, and hiding places.” But, while many grassroots efforts face difficulties due to inexperience with international shipping regulations, Kellgren had a solution. He had been dealing with this type of red tape for many years and found a way to expedite the process. He was able to contact a diplomat at the Ukrainian Embassy through a Ukrainian neighbor. In just four days, Kellgren was able to obtain a federal arms export licence. This is a process that can take several months. According to the AP Kellgren obtained a license that far exceeds the initial 400 9mm folding rifles. According to the article, KelTec plans to arrange additional shipments in future. Its license allows for the export of upto 10,000 weapons. The company has also offered the Ukrainians a production line and weekly shipment. KelTec is also allowing organizers of a New York City non-profit, who have collected 60 long guns to piggyback on its licence. KelTec is helping to organize the effort to get more guns into the hands of Ukrainian civilians by allowing them to piggyback on their license. A concerted effort The AP story continues to say that “from California to New York sheriff’s offices and nonprofits have also collected thousands upon thousands of sets of armor for Ukraine” and that the NSSF has provided step-by-step instructions for how to donate firearms. The report also detailed how to apply expedited for a export license and the specific needs of Ukraine. Companies like Adams Arms have joined the Ukrainian army by arming their citizens. Despite the fact that rifles are not able to withstand Russia’s fighter jets or cluster bombs, some people believe they are helping the street. Kellgren said to the AP that most of the people in Ukraine have civilian firearms and are holding off a superpower. “The X-factor is not necessarily what equipment you have. … It all comes down to the will-to-fight.” Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today!
