Ankle weight on stock optimizes balance of benchrest rifle

April 6, 2022 Credit to Joe Friedrich, a simple but effective accessory for your benchrest rifle. Joe shoots a.22 LR benchrest rig equipped with a barrel tuner. He found that his rifle was not balanced when he added weights. He wanted to add weight to the rear of the rifle without drilling holes in it. He wanted the weight to be easily removed and placed on another rifle in his arsenal. Joe wanted a weight that could be easily moved from one gun to the next. Joe found a 1.5-lb ankleweight at a local sporting goods store. It comes with a padded, tubular elastic wrap. It’s a 1.5-lb sausage wrapped in a soft, stretchy nylon covering. Imagine a very fat, heavy bungee rope. Joe simply attached a zip tie to the end to create a loop that fits perfectly over the top of his buttstock. CLICK HERE to see a full-screen photo. Joe simply slides his ankle weight forward and back on the stock to “tune” it’s balance. This ankle weight can be moved to adjust the rifle’s balance on a variety BR stocks, including a McMillan edge. It worked flawlessly. This is a great invention and would work well with ARs and sport rifles. If you are competing in a registered match that has weight restrictions, you must ensure that your rifle meets those class weight limits.
