Gun control activists have a long-standing strategy of loudly claiming Second Amendment supporters who respect the law are using “scare tactics” while opposing proposed gun controls. U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., the “Honey Pot Congressman”, isn’t new in this charade and continues to lie about gun control. His record is one that supports strict gun control. This includes a failed presidential campaign that played second fiddle to Robert Francis O’Rourke, who carried the gun control water. RELATED STORY: President Biden Announces a New ATF Director Swalwell Continues to Lye About President Biden’s Gun Control Policy Rep. Swalwell published a Newsweek op-ed and used the ruse. “For decades, one of the most tried and true scare tactics by the gun lobby is that the government–specifically Democrats–are coming for your guns,” the Congressman wrote. “These misinformation campaigns are used for years to scare law-abiding Americans into believing they will be placed under government surveillance to confiscate guns.” Lies About Lies Rep. Swalwell’s anti Second Amendment rant is that President Joe Biden does not have any interest in confiscating legally-owned firearms. He stated, “Let’s be clear, the Biden administration does not have a secret plan to take your guns away.” He is correct, however – President Biden’s gun controls plans are not secret. They are well-known and repeated often by the public. Gun Control in His Own Words. President Biden has repeatedly called the lawful firearms industry “the enemy.” He’s also stated that he’s “the only one who has taken on the industry and won.” The president was referring to his ability to pass a ban against Modern Sporting Rifles, which he incorrectly and derogatorily calls “assault weapon” in his own words. In the 1990s, President Biden voted to ban America’s most popular centerfire semiautomatic rifle. He is still pushing for a ban on common-owned firearms. Although he claims that the ban will reduce crime, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that the “Assault Weapons Ban did not reduce crime rates.” In reality, violent crime rates dropped after the ban expired. MSR ownership soared to more than 20,000,000 rifles in circulation. The president also repeated his favorite lie, that the firearm industry is “the only one in the country that is not subject to liability.” This lie has been fact-checked into oblivion, with media saying, “Gun manufacturers can certainly be sued…Biden is wrong to say gun manufacturers are alone.” The president lies about his wishes to ban certain lawfully-manufactured and legally-purchased firearms, as well as his wishes to shut down an entire industry that supports the ability of Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights. Twisting Truth Rep. Swalwell would also ban MSRs, and he’s not the only one. Swalwell would go further and tell Tucker Carlson on Fox News that he’d institute a forced government buyback program for firearms. He also suggested that if Americans refused to surrender firearms to a government confiscation program, the U.S. government could use nukes to punish those who refuse. If he wanted, Rep. Swalwell would require a national firearm registry to make confiscation more straightforward. This is the only way that a universal background check can work, a policy both Rep. Swalwell & President Biden support. Without mandatory registration, universal background checks (UBCs), are not enforceable. This is contrary to the 1986 Gun Control Act as well as the 1993 Brady Act. Rep. Swalwell claims that claims about a national gun registry were “conspiracy theories” and that, “The simple fact is that a gun register does not exist and isn’t even being considered to illegally track law-abiding citizens who exercise their Second Amendment rights.” He even twisted one of my tweets in order to suggest that the firearm industry supports his false claims. Facts are important. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives does not maintain a searchable national firearm registry. However, it does keep an Out-of business Records (OBR), database that allows for the tracking of firearms used in crimes. This collection of records does not allow anyone to search for the number and type of firearms owned by any individual. OBR data is used for about 30 percent of firearm trace searches. According to the most recent ATF trace data, the average time between the original sale of a firearm and when it was recovered by law enforcement was close to 10 years. Very old records are rarely useful for law enforcement. NSSF supports requiring ATF records older than 20 years be purged in order to save taxpayer money and use that money to increase the number of agents on the streets to prevent crime from ever happening. Rep. Swalwell knew that he had taken the tweet out-of-context to lie about what would be required if a universal backcheck were to be implemented. He clearly serves the gun control donors. After lying about the firearm industry and his policies for law-abiding Americans it is clear that President Biden would pursue lawful gun owners and destroy the industry that allows for the exercise and protection of the Second Amendment. Because he would do exactly the same thing, Rep. Swalwell is just carrying the president’s gun control water.
