You can shoot prairie dogs with a.22 LR rifle. Yes, you can shoot prairie dogs with a.22 LR rifle. You should know your drops and keep your targets within a reasonable range (within 240 yards). The.17 HMR is a much more powerful, flat-shooting and effective P-dog slayer, but a skilled marksman can still get good results with a.22 LR rimfire gun, as Jim See, ace PRS shooter, and gunsmith, recently demonstrated. Jim wrote on his Facebook Page: “Took out a.22 LR for some LR Prairie poodles. There weren’t many in this area, but it gave us a chance to get some great hits. Norma TAC-22 ammunition won the first round hit at 189 yards. The body-shot dog was a first round kill at 240 yards. I took one more head shot at 163, with a second-round hit. The best thing about the.22 Long Rifle ammunition is that the [critters] aren’t too spooky so a follow up shot with a correction can usually be taken to improve wind hold. A.22 LR rimfire shot will make less noise than a centerfire shot, even if it is not suppressed. It is very affordable — a 50rd pack is only $4.50 at Palmetto state Armory. Some lots have shown exceptional accuracy. These target photos (below), may have been taken by Champion Shooters Supply, which may have acquired an exceptional lot. According to the vendor, “We have found that this works well in Ruger rifles, handguns and target pistols.” These 5-shot groups are at 50 yards using an Anschutz 1913 rifle. This is a great deal. Jim claims that the TAC-22 ammo is 1? His rifle can shoot groups of up to 100 yards.
