With the increase in doxxing, it is even more dangerous. You can now delete your personal information from Google to protect yourself online. You may be surprised at how much personal information is available online if you’ve ever done a Google search for yourself. It’s not always easy to remove your personal data from the public eye. It was necessary to have a legitimate reason for search engines like Google to remove your personal information from search results. A specific threat had to exist, such as identity theft. Breitbart reported that Google had previously refused to remove financial and personal information in cases where there was a legitimate risk. However, Google now allows anyone to remove their personal data. However, asking Google to remove your content doesn’t mean it will be removed. NPR’s report on the changes states that “Even with the modifications, there are still some reasons Google might deny a request for removal.” They only deal with information that is “broadly helpful” or part of a public record. This means that information about the sex offender registry, for instance, will still be visible. Request to Remove Your Information from Search Results. To start the process, visit the Removal Request page on Google. According to the site, in order for consideration of content removal, it has to meet these requirements: Confidential government identification (ID) numbers like U.S. Social Security Number, Argentine Single Tax Identification Number, Brazil Cadastro de pessoas Fisicas, Korea Resident Registration Number, China Resident Identity Card, etc.Bank account numbersCredit card numbersImages of handwritten signaturesImages of ID docsHighly personal, restricted, and official records, like medical recordsPersonal contact information (physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses)Confidential login credentialsThere is a four-step process after submitting the removal request if you meet these requirements. Google explains the process as follows: After submitting your removal request, you will receive an automated email confirmation. This confirms that we have received your request. We will review it. Each request is evaluated based on the above requirements. We gather additional information, if necessary. In some cases, we may need more information. We may ask for more information in some cases. You can also resubmit your request if your request is denied. However, your information will not be removed from Google search. Michelle Chang, Google’s Global Policy Lead, Search, said that “removing content from Google Search will not remove it from the internet. It is important to remember that it won’t take it out of Google Search. This is why it’s worth contacting the hosting site directly if you are comfortable doing so. Your information will still be available online, but it will be more difficult to find. If you want to dig deeper, contact any company holding your information and ask them if they can remove it from their website. After you’re done, lock down your social media accounts.
