Enter to Win a Free Gun Friday from IWI! Close (Photo by SmartTrigger Lock) Gun safes are the best way to keep your firearms safe. For various reasons, this is not always possible. Perhaps you don’t have enough money to buy a safe. Perhaps you don’t have enough space for a large safe. You might have too many guns for a safe to hold. These methods can help you store your guns safely and securely without the need for a safe. RELATED STORY 5 Trigger locks that break the mold for quick access to your firearm Methods to store guns without a safe Even if you don’t have children, it is a good idea. In some states, it is a law that guns must be protected from unauthorised access. But, this is not true in all states. Make sure you check the laws in your jurisdiction and state. Even if it isn’t the law in your state we should still consider safe storage of our firearms as gun owners. You never know who might visit your home. Perhaps a neighbor with kids, a friend, or relative. To ensure security, you should use a locking system in your storage. It is a good idea also to keep the ammunition separate from the firearm(s). Children are curious and will find the most hidden things. You should also make sure you have one easy-to-access storage option if you can afford it. You should have one firearm that is easily accessible for home defense, regardless of whether it is a small, affordable safe or a biometric trigger lock. Trigger Lock or Cable locks Regardless of how you store your firearm, a trigger lock and cable lock are essential. A cable lock should be provided if your gun was purchased from a gun shop. Even if the cable lock was not provided, your local police department may be able to provide them for you. For ideas on where to get one, you can check out organizations like Project Child Safe. A biometric trigger lock is an option if you don’t have the funds for a safe. This will allow you to have at least one firearm available for home defense. Gun Storage Bag While it does not offer security, a gun storage case will protect your guns from rust during storage. This is a great option for long-term gun storage. However, many do not offer any security. It is a good idea not to store ammunition near the firearm(s), but to have some kind of locking device. Concealed gun storage book (Photo by Amazon.com). Although they don’t offer security, concealed gun storage books provide concealment at a high level. Many of the products available on the market look very real and convincing. But make sure your placement is just as convincing. Place it on a bookshelf together with other books to blend in. Then, place it randomly among the other books. People will be attracted to it if it is placed on a table or alone on a bookshelf. It should blend in seamlessly. If possible, choose a boring and obscure title. People won’t be interested in books with interesting titles if you don’t. Gun Cabinet (Photo: Cymax.com). Although they are almost as expensive than a gun safe you can still find affordable options. This is a great, lockable option to store a few long guns (or more). They are usually lockable and can be locked to prevent easy access. Display models, however, have glass fronts that do not protect against theft. For extra safety, keep your guns unloaded if you choose this option. Gun Cases Most firearms arrive in a case, usually a hard case. Nearly all cases have a hole to accommodate a lock. A small lock can help protect your firearm from the untrues and keep the children away. You might not receive a case in private sales. Some firearms also come with a soft bag. Talk to your local gun shop about buying a lockable gun case. False Wall and Ventilation: If you’re a home-owner, you can build a false wall. This will give you hidden storage options that most people won’t even notice. It is important to make sure it blends in. It can attract unwanted attention if it is done incorrectly. Ventilation ducts can also be used as a hideout, especially if they’re higher up. They are not easy to access but will keep your firearm safe from prying eyes and little hands. In the event of a break in, it is possible for the burglar to check the vents for valuables. Security Case or Lock Box A security case or lockbox is essentially a safe that can be locked. You won’t get the same amenities as a gun safe. They are lightweight and easy to carry. They are also easy to open at a different location due to their lightweight construction. If you’re feeling a bit more determined, you can make the mountable by drilling a few holes. Hidden Gun Storage Furniture (Photo by LibertyHomeConcealment.com)This option is not a budget option and is included mainly for those that want to have fast access to their firearm. There are many great companies that offer wall hangings and furniture that conceals everything. They can be opened to reveal additional magazines and firearms in an emergency. These can be expensive but provide immediate access and complete privacy when not in use. Additional Considerations Always verify your local laws concerning firearm storage. Even if your plan is foolproof, it might not be legal. Also, unless you are using it for home defense, keep your firearms locked and separate your ammunition. It is possible for an accident to occur so it is important that you thoroughly review your plan. Is it easy to find? If it is, how easy can you access it? These questions should be viewed from multiple angles, including children, curious friends/family, and others. Security is the key, and you are responsible for scrutinizing your plan. Combining concealment with a locking device will make your home more secure. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
