You have likely heard great advice, whether you are on a training course or at the gun range. There seems to be a pearl of wisdom for almost every gun owner. Everyone is a firearms instructor, regardless of whether it’s shooting techniques or safety. This is not a bad thing. Sharing knowledge is how civilization progresses. It’s time for you to share your knowledge. What is the best advice you have ever received regarding firearm training? RELATED STORY STORY: What are some solid, less-than-lethal self-defense methods? The Best Firearm Training Advice you’ve Ever Received. We reached out to you for some of the best advice we’ve ever heard. As with all Real Talk segments, you covered many important topics, making it a rich discussion. Safety and first aid Because I am a strong supporter of firearm safety, this was the best place to begin. Some of these rules address safety basics, while others address safety and first aid. We should start with firearm safety. A firearm is not a toy!” There is a story behind this: “Carry an emergency tourniquet.” How much do you trust your firearm’s safety features? These readers aren’t as comfortable about relying on them: “Treat all guns like there is no safety.” It’s a useful tip. LoL. “Safety is something that happens between your ears, and not something you hold in a hand.” Raising the next generation to respect firearms. I’m totally in agreement with this: “Teach children to respect guns and that firearms aren’t toys.” I would also like to emphasize the importance of ear and eye protection. You only have one set of eyes and ears so you need to make sure you take good care of them. The importance of practice If you’re going to spend any time at the shooting range, it is important that you make the most of it. It is hard to overstate the importance of practice and proper training. It is important to practice what you have learned in training programs. Although I had heard it before, I forgot it. This is a powerful statement that illustrates the importance to practice the right way. “Practice makes permanent, but not perfect.” You should also do it with purpose. If you’re going to take your time, it should mean something: “Training with purpose.” “Shooting, like all things, is a process, and not an event. “Fast is fine, accuracy is essential. You must not rush in a gunfight. Wyatt Earp. “Gunfights are won in millimeters, seconds, and milliseconds.” It is important to get out on the range to improve and speed up your skills. Simulating real-life situations is a great way to make sure you get the most out your training. Participating in competition shooting is another great way to practice your aim. Always be open to new opportunities. Be intentional about your carry. Unfortunately, some people treat firearms as a security blanket. They aren’t content with the fact that they feel safe having a concealed carry permit and a gun. There are serious consequences to carrying a firearm, and possibly using it for self defense. Understanding the dangers of carrying a firearm, its potential uses, and how to best use it is important. It is best to avoid getting into a gunfight. If you do get into a gunfight, be calm and take the necessary steps to ensure your success. I learned years ago that if you have a gun and get into an argument, it is likely that there is a gun involved. This is something that has stayed with me for many years. Be aware of what you are carrying, or any time. Don’t let emotion or ego drive you. Until it is time to stop, remain calm, cool and collected. Never let your firearm be the reason for an altercation. Some law enforcement agencies may even consider this. Legal Considerations. I will be honest, I was surprised that only one person mentioned legal concerns. You should be familiar with the laws of your state and local jurisdiction if you are carrying anything that has self-defense intent. In the United States, ignorance of the law is not a defense. “Know and understand your [self defense] laws.” U.S. lawShield is a great resource for learning about the laws in your state. It also provides legal services to members. It also recently released downloadable guides to traveling with a firearm. There are one for each state, and one for the entire country. Train hard, but be safe. When you have the chance to share your knowledge with other shooters, don’t hesitate to do so. You might save someone’s lives.
