Taurus 856 Executive grade 38 Special First Look and Rounds Downrange

Enter to WIN a Free Gun Friday! IWI’s soon-to-be released Masada Slim Pistol and Caldwell Emax Shadows Pro! Close The story of Taurus 856 Executive Grade actually began a few years ago when the leadership of Taurus gathered a number of serious revolver shooters. The ideas that were generated from that meeting would eventually be realized in Taurus’ first revolver designed for revolver enthusiasts. RELATED STORY: The Taurus GX4 Optic-Ready T.O.R.O. Fights Like a Bull Taurus 856 Executive-Grade Features What are these features? Let’s take the time to look at them. The Taurus 856 comes with the proven small frame six shot. This puts it on par or the Ruger SP101, which is a six shot revolver. The Executive Grade is chambered with 38 Special +P. The Executive Grade is chambered in 38 Special +P. Excessive recoil is usually the result of playing with 357 Magnum. The new 856 has a double action mode. Defensive revolvers can only be used in a single action mode. The factory will give the 856 Executive a smooth draw by simply blagging the hammer. Fired with Federal 130 grain FMJ ammunition. Lastly, the sights can be used with modern JHP ammo. People who purchase revolvers for personal protection will use 130 grain FMJ and 125 grain or 135 grains JHP. Many factory revolvers that have fixed sights won’t print these grain weights at the point of aim will not. My sample Taurus does print those grain weights at point of aim, which is enough to recommend it. Accessories for the Taurus 856 executive grade The Taurus 856 Executive grade in 38 Special +P is not new. It’s an upgrade of an existing gun, so there’s already a lot of gear. The new Taurus Executive will fit most holsters that are compatible with the Kimber K6s and the Ruger SP101. It will also fit holsters for Taurus 856s. The new gun has a 3-inch barrel. It’s important to remember to fit the gun in the holster correctly when unloading it. The new 856 Executive fits perfectly the Galco Combat Master for Kimber K6s. Speed loaders are another important thing to remember. What speed loaders are compatible with the Taurus 856 Executive grade? I’m glad you asked. It can accept most speedloaders designed for S&W K frame revolvers, including the Model 66. The Speed Beez K frame loader worked flawlessly when I tested it. The Safariland Comp II also worked well, so the HKS loader should work fine. The Safariland Comp III loader does not work with the Taurus. Problem is that the loader’s body is too wide and touches the cylinder latch release. This interferes with the way the loader inserts the rounds into the gun. Shooting the Taurus 856 Executive Grade T The Taurus 856 Executive grade arrived just before I had a trip and so I only had a short range time. Although only 106 rounds were used, the 106 rounds make a good first impression. The 856 EG hits were with both 130 grain FMJ and my Speer 135 grain +P gold Dots. It was not far from Federal Gold Medal Match 148-grain full wadcutters which produced a nice 25 yard group. It is impressive to see a double-action revolver with fixed sights measuring under 2.5 inches. The gun’s wood grips are very comfortable in the hand and make it easy to fire rapid fire. Although concealment is a little more difficult with them, that’s to be expected. Revolver grips make it easier to conceal the gun, but that doesn’t mean it is harder to shoot. Don’t let this worry you. The 856 Executive Grade’s compact size makes it an excellent choice for concealed carry. Final Thoughts: I have a mixed history with Taurus revolvers. I have owned (and sold!) several. Actually, my critiques of Taurus’ products were used to train Taurus’ customer service team on how to overcome common complaints. But that Taurus seems to have vanished and they are now producing products that are truly exciting under the leadership Brett Vorhees. Their competition ready 22 is amazing, and the newly launched G3 Tactical is a significant step forward. I like where Taurus is going as a brand. That is why I like Taurus 856 Executive grade. It’s not a perfect revolver, but there are some things I would change. None of these things are enough to stop me from recommending this gun. The Executive Grade’s first revolver is a range and concealed carry ready revolver that comes out of the box at a price under $700. It’s a great revolver. I hope the Executive Grade will be extended to other Taurus revolvers, such as an 8 shot 9mm Raging Bull. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
