He measured the primers and found that they were the correct thickness. However, his primer pockets didn’t seem deep enough. Boyd Allen, our friend, diagnosed the problem. The problem was in the decapping rod. If the rod is too low (screwed in far enough), the base of full-diameter rod shaft (just below the pin) will contact your case. The shaft is made of steel, while your case is made from brass, which is a softer, weaker metal. The shaft can stretch the base of your primer pocket outward when you lift the case into the die. Most presses have enough leverage for this. The fix is easy. Adjust the decapping rod to ensure that the rod shaft’s base does not touch the case’s interior.
