Real Talk: What is the one survival tool that everyone should have?

I was raised backpacking in the Colorado Rockies, and have backpacked many beautiful places throughout the US and Amazon Jungle. I learned that it is better to pack less and rely on nature’s resources. But tools are what make us different from animals. But what if there was only one survival tool? What would it be? RELATED STORY: Real Talk: Are your bumper stickers giving the world too much information? What is the one survival tool that everyone should have? It’s easy to make a list of survival items to have on hand in case of an emergency or while backpacking. Everyone should have the basic necessities: shelter, fire, water, navigation, and shelter. It is difficult to reduce that list down to ten items as they do on Alone. How do you narrow it down to one item? This is definitely a more difficult mental exercise. We turned to you in our latest Real Talk segment, to hear your thoughts. One reader stated that he was focusing on security and food. Another reader agrees and simply states, “Gun.” A firearm is limited in its capabilities, but it excels at its purpose, making it a useful tool to have around. Personally, I always have a flashlight. It takes only one trip to the woods at night to realize how important they are. One reader seems to agree: “A tactical flashlight as shown here w/a holster. It’s a useful tool for utility work, a good light source in case of blackout, and a good self defense tool as it can be used to temporarily blind an attacker as well as being used as an impact weapon. I don’t leave home without one, and I always keep it with my carry gun and other personal defense tools.” Another reader clearly thinks along the lines of the lexicon for survival needs: “Firestarter.” Fire provides warmth, security (from many animal species), water purification, food preparation, and so much more. It’s a smart decision. One reader however, eloquently outsmarted it: “Barclaycard.” It seems that you can get all the survival tools and resources you need with a credit card. Bravo, sir. Bravo. Consensus Answers It turns out that there are two answers to the question that have reached consensus among readers. These are not to be taken away from the answers, but I would choose one of these tools if I had to pick one tool. It would actually be both. In a moment, you will see what I mean. The knife, man’s oldest tool, was the first item to reach a consensus. A good knife is essential for any project you are attempting to build from natural resources. You can also hunt and process game if you have the right knowledge. Many readers listed a knife among their tools, but one reader went further: “Multi-tool.” I like his perspective. It technically is only one tool, but it can be used in many ways. Technically, the final consensus is not a “tool” in the same way that everything else on this list. It is nevertheless a tool. It is an important tool. Your brain. Although many people may put it differently, they all refer to the same thing: “A brain.” No matter what you have on your person, your mind will prevail over all. The beauty of the mind is that it doesn’t count as a tool. You can use your mind’s power as a survival multiplier, regardless of which physical tool you choose. They might be able take your tool, but not your mind. Stay safe and train hard. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
