Close (Photo by Noah Wolf: WikiMediaCommons) Despite all the talk about keeping children safe, one topic is being overlooked by politicians and the media. This is the topic of gun safety education for children. Gun safety was taught in schools at one time, and there were hardly any incidents in the United States. This topic has been removed from schools, and the results are obvious. It is important, but it cannot be overemphasized. Parents must take up the responsibility. RELATED STORY Basic Rules of Firearm Safety Encourage Safer Shooting Experience Teaching your Child About Gun Safety. To be clear, I mean that parents must take over the responsibility for gun safety now that schools aren’t teaching it. Parents should always be involved in firearm safety education, regardless of any other sources. This applies regardless of whether guns are in the home. Because you never know when your child might be exposed to a gun in another location. Gun safety is not just for teens and children, but for all family members. Safe gun storage is as important as safe handling. Unintentional shootings are greatly reduced when firearm storage is safe. Safe firearm storage is important for children. Make sure firearms are locked away so that no one can access them. You should also keep firearms locked away when not in use, except for personal/home defense firearms. Teach children age-appropriate lessons It is obvious that small children are not as mature mentally as teenagers. Their comprehension of serious topics is limited as a result. It is important to reach them at their level. Keep in mind that children are very attention-strapped. It is unlikely that they will pay attention to an hour-long lecture about gun safety with 40 points. The lesson must be engaging and interactive enough to keep a child’s interest. (Photo by NRA Eddie Eagle). The NRA has an excellent resource for parents called Eddie Eagle. The program offers a simple four-step strategy for children who encounter a firearm: StopDon’t TouchRun AwayTell an Adult. The home page also features a short cartoon that kids can enjoy and which immediately builds a gun safety foundation. There are also free downloadable parent/instructor guides and kids’ activity books for children. The instruction guides and activity books are available in three levels: PreK & Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, and 3rd and 4th grades. They also have a DVD for $9.95, reward stickers for $1.00 (25 per pack), and a Wing Team certificate. Repetition is key to helping children retain information. After you have completed the Eddie Eagle safety training, make it a game. Ask them questions about what to do if they come across a gun, and then reward them with the Eddie Eagle stickers. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics children thrive on positive reinforcement. This makes it a great tool to teach gun safety to your child. Teaching teenagers is different from teaching small children but just as important. It can sometimes be more difficult to engage teenagers. Teenagers may already be able to tell the difference between toy guns, real guns, and they think they know everything. Teenagers are at different levels of emotional and mental development than children. Teenagers can easily become bored and frustrated when “stupid adults” tell them what to do. It’s important to make it enjoyable. Talk to them about safe firearm handling, and then teach them how to shoot correctly. Let them practice dry fire with a firearm. Let them experience firsthand the destructive effects of firearms if they are not treated with live fire instruction. You don’t know what it is until you try. Teenagers learn better through repetition, just like younger children. Ask them questions every now and again. Offer some type of reward if they demonstrate gun safety. You could even grab some paintball guns to hit a course. This will give them the chance to practice safe gun handling in a safe environment and also teach them some shooting skills.
