Gun control politicians and the so-called “mainstream media” spend a lot of time convincing us that guns are a scourge. As such, they advocate for tighter restrictions. But the truth is that citizens using guns save more lives every year than criminals who misuse guns. RELATED STORY A Woman with a Pistol Stops an Ar-15-wielding Man from Shooting Partygoers with It. The facts show that guns save lives. In fact, some government agencies have joined the gun-ban wagon. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) is not the least. This agency wants to make gun violence a public health problem. This is instead of focusing on the high homicide rates as a violent criminal problem. Just the Facts Marc Gertz and Gary Kleck, who did the most comprehensive work on the subject, found that guns were used in defense situations far more than most Americans believed. The 1995 article “Armed Resistance to Crime. The Prevalence and Nature of Self Defense With a Gun,” published by The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, detailed how gun owners in the United States use guns up to 2.5 millions times per year for self-defense. Marvin E. Wolfgang, a gun control advocate and researcher, was not pleased with the report. He wrote, “What bothers me is the article by Gary Kleck, Marc Gertz. I am disturbed by the fact that they have presented a clear-cut case for methodologically sound research supporting what I have opposed for years, namely the use of a firearm to defend against a criminal perpetrator . It is hard to believe. It is difficult to question the data. We don’t have any contrary evidence.” According the Clinton Department of Justice there are approximately 1.5 million self-defense cases each year. This figure was published by the National Institute of Justice in 1997 under Guns in America. This is a study by Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig, anti-gun criminologists. These defensive gun uses do not even require firing the weapon. According to Kleck’s 1991 study, “Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America”, armed citizens kill twice the number of criminals than law enforcement officers each year. Banning guns creates killing zones. If guns save lives, it is only natural that gun ownership restrictions can lead to the loss of lives. So-called “gun-free zones” are a perfect example of this. Anti-gun advocates have made a falsehood out of so-called “gun free zones”. They leave people who are not criminals free to carry their guns in areas that they don’t want. These areas, where concealed carry permit holders are prohibited from carrying concealed handguns, could be referred to more appropriately as “victim zones” and “self-defense-free zone,” since only law-abiding people are affected. John Lott, president and CEO of the Crime Prevention Research Center, wrote that such zones have a significant impact on the lives of gunmen in an Op-Ed published in the Twin Cities Pioneer Press in 2018. He stated: “Most gunmen know they can kill more people if the victims can’t defend their own defenses.” This is one reason why 98 per cent of mass shootings in public places since 1950 have been committed in areas where citizens are prohibited from owning guns. Anyone who can see beyond their biases should understand that criminals don’t follow the law. Gun-free zones don’t necessarily mean “gun-free.” They are, by definition, areas where only criminals can carry guns. Armed Citizens Save Lives. Two recent examples of law-abiding, armed citizens saving multiple lives, one where a mass shooting was stopped in its tracks, are compelling examples of how U.S. firearm owners regularly save lives. Both stories have a female protagonist. About 40 people attended a birthday/graduation party in a West Virginia apartment building on May 29th. A man drove recklessly through the party during the party. The man was asked by members of the party to slow down because children were playing nearby. The twice-convicted felon fled but quickly returned with a rifle, which was illegal for him to have given his felony status. He began firing into the crowd. A woman present immediately pulled her legally concealed firearm, and fatally shot him. Lt. Tony Hazelett, Charleston Police Department, said that she was just a member in the community who was legally carrying her weapon. “And instead of running away from the threat, she engaged with it and saved many lives,” said Lt. Tony Hazelett from the Charleston Police Department. A week later, a pregnant mother from Florida used an AR-15-style rifle to save her entire household from a violent home invasion. Fox News reports that Jeremy King was in his Tampa-area home with his daughter and wife when two armed, hooded, and masked men entered the house and began pistol-whipping King. They then grabbed King’s 11-year-old daughter. The mother ran to another bedroom, grabbed her AR-15 and fired on the attackers. The intruders fled immediately, and one of them was later found dead in a nearby ditch. The fact is that America’s gun owners should not listen to gun-banners or nay-sayers claiming that firearms are not used to save lives. Gun control advocates are more interested in guns than they are in control. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
