Ammo Brief: .270 Winchester

Useful for bagging everything from big game down to varmints, .270 Winchester is America’s longstanding welterweight champ. This is an excerpt from Cartridge’s Of The World, 16th Edition, available now at GunDigestStore.com.Designed by Winchester in 1925 for its Model 54 bolt-action rifle, .270 Winchester caused quite a stir in shooting circles. It was the first big-game cartridge to offer long-range performance. The cartridge is based upon the.30-06 case necked to.277 inches. Although the case neck is slightly longer, the.270 Winchester cartridge is identical to the.30-06. General CommentsAlongside the.30–06, this cartridge is one of America’s most accurate and efficient all-round big-game cartridges. Since its introduction, it has gained a steady reputation and popularity. The.270 was not designed to be a varmint rifle. However, it will work well in that capacity with bullets of 90-110 grains. While some may disagree, current evidence supports the conclusion that.270 is sufficient for all North American big game. The intended use and hunting conditions will influence the performance of the.270 and the.30-06. Many shoot better with.270 than.30-06. The.270 shoots flatter than the.30–06 and is therefore a better varmint/big game rifle. The.30-06 with its 180, 200, and 220-grain bullets must be considered a superior heavy-game cartridge. In accuracy and performance, there isn’t much to dispute. It is a very difficult task to argue for either one or the other. The .270 Winchester is commercially loaded by all large domestic and most foreign ammunition manufacturers.Editor’s Note: This article is an excerpt of Cartridge’s Of The World, 16th Edition.Raise Your Ammo IQ:NEXT STEP: Download Your Free Storm Tactical Printable Target Pack62 Printable MOA Targets with DOT Drills – Rifle Range in YARDSThis impressive target pack from our friends at Storm Tactical contains62 printable targetsfor rifle and handgun range use.
