There is no shortage of legal-armed citizens who use firearms to stop violent criminals from their tracks. This weekend is yet another example of a situation which could have been much worse if it wasn’t for concealed carry. A 22-year-old citizen legally armed intervened to stop a mass shooting that was unfolding on Sunday evening. Many people are still alive today because of this.

Indiana Mass Shooting Stopped by 22-Year-Old Legally Armed Citizen
Many people can thank a 22-year old legal firearm owner for saving their lives as they begin the work week. Many families will also be able to spend more time with their loved ones. This young man’s quick thinking made the news much more interesting.
According to Reuters, “A gunman opened fire in a food court at a shopping mall near Indianapolis on Sunday before a witness fatally shot him,” Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison stated.
Reports state that two other people were injured, including a 12-year old girl who sustained mild injuries. Both of the injured are now in stable condition. One of the four gunfire victims was a male and the other three were all female. The gender and age of the three victims who died has not been released by law enforcement.
According to reports, the attacker entered the mall carrying a rifle and several magazines. He then began firing at the food court. The attacker, a 22-year-old Bartholomew County resident, was legally carrying his firearm inside the mall at the time of the attack. He reacted quickly to the shooting and killed the attacker as soon as it began.
Although it is not clear if the backpack is related, this story is still evolving. However, police also found a suspicious backpack near the food court. The contents of the backpack have not yet been reported.
WDRB.com says, “The real hero is the citizen who was lawfully carrying a firearm inside that food court and was able stop the shooter almost immediately as he started,” [Greenwood Police Chief Jim] Ison stated.”
Indiana Constitutional Carry Law
All indications point to the fact that the 22-year old hero carried a CCW. However, it is worth noting Indiana Constitutional Carry Law was in effect on July 1, 2022. This means that even if the hero didn’t have CCW, he would still have been allowed to carry his firearm.
USACarry.com states that concealed carry is legal as long as you are at least 18 years old and not prohibited from owning a firearm. This applies to both residents and non-residents in Indiana.
Indiana will continue to issue handgun licenses with either lifetime or five-year permits. You will still be eligible for reciprocity in other states with the permit.
Indiana State Police released a PDF that states, “On July 1, 2022 the State of Indiana will no more require a permit to legally carry or conceal a handgun within its borders.” This law does not allow anyone to legally carry a handgun. Indiana law has certain criteria that must be met in order to make it legal.
The PDF then lists the criteria for prohibited persons. This is very similar to many CCW/CPL requirements.
The evidence is overwhelming. This young man is an example of how more armed citizens can help stop mass shootings and save lives. It looks like Indiana is moving in the right direction.
