New York Democratic Primary Brings Gun Control Moves to Focus

Two anti-gun New York Congressmen will be facing off in a primary election next week. The winner’s political career will end. This matchup shows why gun control efforts on Capitol Hill are continuing even after President Joe Biden signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Community Act. Gun control is a battle between criminals and law-abiding Americans.

House Hearings Show the Gun Control Focus of the Upcoming New York Primary

Carolyn Maloney, U.S. Rep. (D-N.Y.), chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and has called three representatives from the firearm industry to testify at a show hearing on gun controls in the near future.

She wants gross revenue and profit from the sale of Modern Sporting Rifles. She also demands spending on advertising, marketing, lobbying federally and state-level and on gun rights groups’ donations.

Rep. Maloney blasted, “Your company continues to profit from selling and marketing weapons of war to civilians despite all the harm they cause.”

Rep. Maloney overlooks the fact that criminals don’t play a part in criminal violence. Criminals do.

Chairwoman Maloney could look closer for witnesses if she was concerned about criminals illegally obtaining and using firearms.

Rival Programming

Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, is refusing second fiddle to Rep. Maloney’s Second Amendment attacks. This week, Chairman Nadler will hold his own hearing in the committee.

The new Assault Weapon Ban Bill, H.R. 1808. The bill would prohibit the manufacture or sale of “any new semiautomatic rifles, even those that can accept detachable magazines …”.”

The proposed legislation lists a number of cosmetic features that would make a firearm eligible for ban. Standard capacity magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds would be banned by the bill.

President Joe Biden repeatedly called for an Assault Weapon Ban. The previous one, passed in 1994, also banned standard capacity magazines. It expired after 10 years and did not reduce crime.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stated that the effect of renewing the ban on gun violence would likely be “too small for reliable measurements.”

Americans are historically reluctant to support a ban on “assault weapons” in the United States. Gallup polls from last month found that only 55% supported a ban, while an Associated Press poll in May showed that only 51% supported a ban.

Moderate Democrats such as Rep. Henry Cuellar (D.Texas), are wary of banning certain types of firearms. Rep. Cuellar stated that he doesn’t believe in banning weapons.

To save his political career, Chairman Nadler would trample upon the Constitution despite the recent Bruen decision by the U.S. Supreme Court holding that laws that infringe the Second Amendment but are not grounded in history, text, or national traditions at the time our nation was founded will not be passed Constitutional muster.

Senate Action

The U.S. Senate Capitol is being occupied by the Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who is holding his own hearing entitled “After the Highland Park Attack, Protecting Our Communities From Mass Shootings.”

Sen. Durbin’s hearing will likely place blame on the firearms industry for the criminal acts committed by deranged individuals. He also calls for a reintroduction of the “assault weapons” ban.

Sen. Durbin stated that the point they were trying to make to us and everyone was: This is madness. To allow individuals to possess this type of weapon, but not military personnel, is not a good idea. And to use these weapons against other Americans is not possible. One would expect that the chairman would have read Heller, McDonald’s and Bruen before voicing his opinion.

Senator John Cornyn (R.Texas) said that the Senate is done with gun controls and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) has said that the Senate is done with gun control and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has pledged to not end the filibuster. There are very little chances of legislation passing both chambers.

Antigun Democrats continue showing that they don’t care about criminals committing these crimes. They want to control and limit the rights of Americans who already follow the laws. Our God-given rights only rungs on their political ladder.

The upcoming hearings before the committee are a reminder of why Americans continue to exercise their Second Amendment rights in record numbers.
