How Suppressors are Made — From Start to Finish Video

August 2, 2022. Watch this video to see the construction of a sound suppressor (aka “silencer”, moderator, or “can”) from start to finish. It’s more complex than you might think. There are many stages to the process. The SilencerCo Octane 45 suppressor is shown in the video. SilencerCo wrote: “What exactly goes into making a silencer?” It might be more than you think. Our streamlined process includes everything from cutting metal to chemical baths to quality control at every step. To see what SilencerCo is doing behind the scenes, watch our latest video, HOW IT’S MULTIPLIED: Octane 45.

Firearms are Loud — 140 dB-175 dB ASHA explains that almost all firearms produce noise above 140 dB. Hearing loss can be permanent if you are exposed to noise levels greater than 140 dB. A small,.22-caliber rifle can make noises of around 140 dB. Big-bore rifles or pistols can produce sound levels over 175dB. Firing guns in an area where sounds can reverberate or bounce off walls or other structures can cause louder noises and increase the risk for hearing loss. Adding muzzle brakes and other modifications to a firearm can increase the gun’s volume. A single shot [.]” can cause severe hearing loss in people who shoot without hearing protection. It depends on the rifle and the cartridge as well as the effectiveness of the suppressor. American Hunter explains that suppressors slow down the speed at which propellant gases escape from the cartridge. These gases rapidly expand and rush out the barrel. These gases are what produce the loud boom you can hear for miles. These gases are slowed down by the suppressor’s internal baffles, so that they don’t all release at once, which muffles the sound. A lot of commercial suppressors can achieve sound suppression levels of 30-35 dB. Thunder Beast Arms’ Zak Smith says that there are many manufacturers that publish values that aren’t reproducible or use an ad hoc test instead. We have tested suppressors with advertised 30-40 dB reductions, and found that they are in the high 20s. “We recommend hunters use ear protection such as electronic muffs even when suppressed.
