A mile is a lot more exciting than a shot at 1,750 yard, regardless of how practical. A mile is more tangible than a shot at 1,750 yards, despite the mere 10-yard difference. We all wanted to try our hand at it. Spoiler alert: Most of those who tried made it to the target, but not without some help. Going The DistancePersonal, long-range shooting doesn’t seem something I am very familiar with. Confined to 200 yards at my local range, previously the farthest I’d ever shot was roughly 400 yards.Despite this, it wasn’t long after arriving at the Bushnell/RCBS-sponsored long-range clinic that I was expected to make hits at more than three times my previous best.Helping the cause was the hardware–which does a great deal to moderate the challenge. The rifle, a G.A. Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor was achieved by the rifle, a G.A. The Bushnell scope is not what most people imagine when they think about it. The 6-36×56 FFP Elite Tactical XRS3 was crystal clear and more than powerful enough for the task at hand.Taking aim with the Bushnell Elite Tactical XRS3.While I wish I could attribute our initial success at 1,300 yards and later 1 mile exclusively to top-flight gear and steady nerves, there is another part to the equation that many shooters overlook when they tackle the challenge–instruction. At Spur Ranch, this was provided by Robert Brantley and Troy Livesay. The Bushnell and RCBS precision shooters team took us through the basics of reaching out. They taught us how to adjust a shooting bag, dial elevation, and control our breath. Brantley’s instruction in micro-adjusting a shooting bag was what really hit home for me. These included the Elite Tactical XRS3 6-36x56FFP and the Elite Tactical DMR3 3.5-21X50FFP. We also tried out a new Bushnell scope, but that one is still in development. The Bushnell Elite Tactical DMR3 scope. All three scopes were excellent. They had clear glass, easy adjustments, and consistent results. They stayed zeroed even after a week of shooting hundreds of rounds with 6.5 Creedmoor. Its G4P-reticle was also easy to use. The DMR3 is a great choice for those who shoot at shorter distances. It has a smaller eye-box and is easier to use. Later in the week, we had a friendly PRS-style competition. The writers were divided into two teams, each with a pro shooter to compete against one another. Each stage had its own rules and requirements, which put emphasis on different skills. The XRS3 scope was a joy to use, with its smooth magnification adjustments allowing fast target acquisition and zooming in close. The elevation turret was also spot on, with the impacts exactly matching my D.O.P.E. card. Although my team didn’t win the gold, it was a great way for us to test Bushnell’s scopes. I shot mostly with a 9mm Taurus GX4 equipped in Bushnell’s RXU-200 Compact red dots. This little optic deserves a shoutout because it was able to maintain its sharpness and visibility under the harsh Wyoming sun. We also loaded many of our own rounds, adding to the challenge. As you can see, RCBS was involved in the shooting experience. This included loading our own rounds. Although it might seem obvious that there will be some variation in the performance of powder charges, it was not something I fully understood until I saw the measuring apparatus. RCBS set us free on a single-stage Rebel Press and a Brass Boss Case Prep Center, as well as a Chargemaster Supreme. I am a complete novice when it comes handloading, which I mean that I have never done it before. The Chargemaster made the experience even more enjoyable. The programable powder dispenser, which can accurately measure a grain to one tenth of an inch, brought laboratory precision to a delicate operation. Parting ShotGetting bitten is easy with the long-range bug. It’s all about the shot. Pause, PING! It’s possible to hit steel from a distance. Bushnell and RCBS proved it was possible for anyone, even an AK chimp like myself who shoots at AK ranges. Brantley’s and Livesay’s extensive knowledge is the key to getting that far. This doesn’t mean that Bushnell and RBCS didn’t have the right hardware. The scopes and reloading gear played a significant role in allowing long shots to come in. While precision shooting can be expensive, the equipment from both brands is well worth the investment. I am looking forward to getting some Bushnell glass soon. The only problem will be finding the right spot to use it. Storm Tactical’s impressive target pack includes62 printable targets for rifle and handgun range usage.
