I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love a soft-shooting 9mm. There are many options, but a 1911 in 9mm is the best. Springfield Armory’s 1911 DS Prodigy is exactly that. The DS stands to double stack, making the Prodigy a 2011-right?
The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy
Although I don’t know what makes a double-stacked, single-action pistol chambered 9mm, a 2011 or a 1911, I believe the Prodigy is a breakthrough in this space. It offers excellent fit, feel, performance, and a very affordable price, which is not often found in pistols of this kind.
You could expect to pay at least $2,000 for such a gun, with magazines starting at around $100. The Prodigy now has a walk-in cost of $1499.99 and magazines at $60. The game has changed.
The 1911 DS Prodigy comes in two sizes: a 5-inch and a 4.25 inch. Both versions come with match-grade bull barrels. The barrels are heavy and have an 11-degree target crown.
The pistols are identical, except for the length. They have front and rear serrations, lightened triggers, skeletonizedhammer, lightened trigger, fiberoptic front sight, and are optic-ready. The AOS, or Agency Optic System is the optics system. It is a joint effort between Springfield and Agency Arms.
It’s an optics plate system that allows you to use different plates for specific optics. This allows for proper optic height and optimized sight pictures. The removable optic plate can be used to mount an optic. It also features a rear view.
The 1911 DS Prodigy’s frame is made of forged steel and has a polymer grip module attached. The grip module has excellent texturing and a positive grip surface. There is also a small cut to reduce the grip radius and aid in undercutting the trigger guard.
The 1911 DS has a magazine capacity of 17+1. There are also extended 20- and 26-round magazines.
The Springfield DS Prodigy has Feature Rich 1911
Additional features include an extended ambidextrous thumb security and a full-length accessory track upfront for lights and other accessories. The Prodigy’s black Cerakote finish is resistant to corrosion.
The Prodigy is an absolute pro at shooting on the range. Both versions have soft shooting and excellent manners. The 5.25-inch has a slow, slow recoil response while the 4.25 has a faster, but less noticeable, one. You can’t lose.
The 1911 DS Prodigy will only get better over time, but the start is impressive. Springfield has certainly provided a lot of pistols for the dollar.
