Technology Insight: How carbon-wrapped barrels are made

October 13, 2022, Montana-based PROOF research released a video that showcases carbon fiber firearms technology as well as the company’s barrel-making processes. The 8-minute film is an interesting introduction to composite barrel-making. It uses aerospace carbon fiber wrapped around steel barrel cores. The video shows the high-tech machines used in PROOF’s production plants. Dr. David Curliss is the General Manager of PROOF Research’s Advanced Composite Division and the former head of U.S. Air Force High Temperature Composites Laboratory. He explains how aerospace expertise aids in the development PROOF’s firearms-related product lines: “We are able provide premier materials for PROOF Research to use in firearm barrels applications as much as for the aerospace market.” We are the only firearms technology company to have composite materials in orbit around Earth.
