This repressive rule by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (and the Liberal Party) prohibits almost all handgun transfers and sales, with the exception of certain “exempted persons”. Handgun imports are also banned. Trudeau’s Liberal Party approved it as an authoritarian attack against freedom. This ban on handgun sales and transfers was first announced in May 2022 and became effective last week. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared in a public speech that Friday, October 21, 2022, the national freeze on handguns was coming into effect. It is now illegal to sell, buy, or transfer handguns in Canada. Trudeau posted the following in a social media post: “People cannot buy, sell, transfer, or transfer handguns within Canada. They also can’t bring newly acquired handguns into Canada. “This handgun ban comes after Trudeau imposed severe restrictions on long rifle sales. Trudeau boasted about his authoritarian past actions restricting long guns, saying: “We have already banned more than 1,500 types assault-style firearms. We’ll do whatever it takes for guns to be out of our communities. Canadian Firearms Rights Groups Oppose Handgun FreezeGroups that support gun rights in Canada are against Trudeau’s handgun ban. The policy violates the rights and freedoms of law-abiding Canadian citizens, so the freeze is opposed by those who believe it won’t achieve its stated objectives. The freeze makes it impossible to sell legally acquired handguns. This effectively steals money from handgun owners. According to the CBC.ca website Tracey Wilson, of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR), the firearms freeze was approved to distract from a scandal-ridden government and will not reduce crime. Wilson said that the CCFR condemned the actions taken by the Liberal government today. Trudeau’s perfectly timed move to freeze handguns on 650,000 licensed, RCMP-vetted gun owner serves no other purpose than to energize the Liberal base. SEE CBC.ca article. The CCFR argues the freeze is unnecessary because there are already significant handgun regulations and rules in place. Handguns are currently classified as “restricted firearms” under Canadian law. They can only be used at RCMP approved shooting ranges. Only licensed owners can legally possess handguns if they have completed a course on safe handling, transportation, and storage of restricted firearms. This is an authoritarian move by a power-hungry prime Minister supported by compliant Liberal Party members in parliament.
