Today, Austin Knudsen, Montana Attorney General, joined 17 other state Attorneys General in asking major shipping companies for clarifications on new policies that allow them track firearm sales with unprecedented detail and bypass warrant requirements. They also requested additional information about their policies and whether the effort was coordinated with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. These demands allow [UPS/FedEx] create a database of American gun purchasers, and to determine exactly which items they have purchased. You may accidentally give federal agencies an exemption from normal warrant requirements by doing this. This allows [UPS/FedEx] to provide information at will or upon request to federal agencies–information detailing which Americans are buying what guns,” Attorney General Knudsen’s letters state. We recommend that you take steps to limit your liability, including ceasing any warrantless information sharing with federal authorities about gun shipments. Attorney General Knudsen also requested updated FFL-related shipping policy information from the two companies.
