January 1, 2023. This story was published as the East Coast enters a new year 2023. Maybe you have been waiting eagerly for the big day, and are now ready to get champagne (and sparklers) in celebration of the new year. 2023 will hopefully be a better year than 2022. 2022 was a difficult year with inflation, the War in Ukraine and shocking incompetence at Washington. We expect many people to open a bottle champagne to mark the beginning of 2023. There is hope for a better year. You can pop the cork the old-fashioned way or learn how to use a rifle shot to open champagne bottles. Kirsten Joy Weiss, a Temecula winery, showed us the best way to open champagne bottles. The best way to open a champagne bottle is to hold it at an angle and then slowly rotate the BOTTLE while keeping the cork in place. It works great, but it’s not as impressive as Kirsten Joy Weiss’s opening of a bottle bubbly. Kirsten Joy Weiss, an ex-competitive smallbore rifle shooter and ace trigger-puller, tried a special New Years’ trick shot a few years back. Kirsten tried to shoot the cork from a champagne bottle in keeping with the festive New Years spirit. After several failed attempts, she finally hit the cork with at most two shots. The cork didn’t fly, however. She did hit the cork, but it didn’t release. That was surprising…Undaunted, Kirsten changed her strategy, aiming for the neck of the bottle. This is similar to “sabering” champagne bottles. This is a method that allows you to extract the bubbly from the bottle by cutting off the neck with a knife. Kirsten successfully removed the top of her bottle by aiming for the neck. (It seems that the pressure inside the champagne bottle does most of the work when “sabering”.
