1. Do your Homework
It is important to have a clear idea of what you want and how it will perform before you buy a car. This gun publication is a good place to start. However, it’s worth taking a few samples. The Internet is a great resource. It’s easy to see the truth through all the marketing hype. This will allow you to gather some very useful information.
2. Find the Right Gun Store
Look for a gun shop with knowledgeable staff. It may be smaller than the other store, but both may have knowledgeable staff available to help you. Do not base your assumptions on the store’s size or location. Don’t rush. You can trust someone you trust by taking a few trips around several shops.
3. Get shooting range access
Find a trusted store that has a shooting range if you can. It’s one thing to be able to shoot a firearm, but another to handle it over the counter. Many ranges will rent firearms. It is a great idea to shoot the same gun as you have before buying it.
4. Know your budget
Set a budget, or at least a very firm limit. Guns are often what you pay for. Higher quality guns can be more expensive. But will you really need the extra money? You will need to purchase a cleaning kit, a bag, a holster, and ammunition to practice and carry your gun. These are not “extras”, they’re essential and can quickly add up.
5. You need to make sure the handgun meets your needs
Before you buy a gun, understand its purpose. Do you want it for home defense, concealed carry, or both? Who will use it? Is it something you can actually carry? What is your skill level? What gun can you handle? Be realistic about what you can and cannot handle.
The better they can help you, the more you know about yourself and your limitations. You can have a competent and knowledgeable person working alongside you to make this a positive experience and get you started on the right track.
