It is said that necessity is the mother and father of invention. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. The 10mm Auto was a.40 caliber cartridge that was created in 1983 using a shorter.30 Remington case. The case was used to carry bullets for the.38-40 Winchester. Jeff Cooper was instrumental in the development of this cartridge. He was always a supporter of large-caliber pistols like the.45 Auto. Some factory loads for the 10mm Auto produce over 600 foot-pounds muzzle energy, making it a very powerful handgun indeed. It produced more blast and recoil than any agents could handle, according to tests. A lighter load was therefore developed and the.40 S&W was born. These cartridges could be modified to fit smaller and lighter pistols that can fire 9mm Luger cartridges. There is no free lunch. It has been discovered that even the.40 S&W is too much for many officers and the cartridge is difficult on small pistols. The FBI then returned to using 9mm Luger-fired service pistols. The first pistol to be chambered in 10mm Auto caliber was the Bren Ten. However, production was cut short. Colt soon produced the Delta Elite in 10mm auto, and Smith & Wesson released the Model 1006. The Colt pistol operates in the same way as the Model 1911.45 Auto. The S&W 1006 is a dual-action pistol. It doesn’t need to cock for the first shot. After that, firing is in single-shot mode. The double-action trigger pull feels smooth and light when fired with two hands. The S&W 1006 is made entirely of stainless steel. It has a 5-inch barrel. The single-stack magazine holds 9 rounds and allows for 10 rounds with a cartridge in it. Dual slide-mounted safety levers are mounted on the slide and can be used to safely de-cock the pistol when it has a round chambered. The pistol has a firing pin block that prevents a round from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. The grips are made from a plastic called Xenoy by General Electric. They can be used to de-cock the pistol if there is no magazine in the chamber. One of these pistols, the Model 1076 was made for the FBI. It had a 4.25 inch barrel and no magazine disconnect, so that the pistol could be fired without the magazine removed. It had a 4.25 inch barrel and no magazine disconnect so the pistol could be fired with the magazine removed. The S&W 1006 is my favorite of all 10mm Auto pistols. It was a heavy, heavy pistol with adjustable or fixed sights. The front sight has a white dot at the rear of the post and the rear sight blade has white dots either side of it. The alignment of the dots can be helpful in sighting in dim light. The 10mm factory ammunition is powerful. A reduced loading of the 10mm Auto (left), led to a shorter cartridge called the.40 S&W. 10mm pistols are strong, and the S&W 1006 is no exception. My 1006 has fixed sights. It weighs 41 ounces with an empty magazine in it. The pistol’s physical characteristics mean that it is always felt when carried. It weighs 41 ounces with an empty magazine inserted. After the magazine is removed, the pistol is cocked. Next, move the slide to the rear until it aligns with the tab of the slide-stoppin. Slide-stop pin can be pulled out of the frame by pushing it from right to left. The slide can be removed from the frame by pushing the pin outwards. The guide rod is held behind by a circular flange which mates with the barrel lug’s underside. The slide recess holds the forward end of the recoilspring. Pushing forward on a flange will allow it to be released from the barrel lug. The guide rod and recoilspring can then be removed from the rear by pushing the flange forward. Now cleaning and lubricating can be done in the usual manner. The barrel is first placed in the slide in its locked position. The locking lug on it is inserted in the slide’s mating notch. The recoil spring is then placed on the guide rod, with the forward end inserted into the recess at slide’s forward end. You can compress the spring by applying enough pressure to the rear end to allow you to place the retaining plate on the barrel lug. This requires some hand strength! This requires some hand strength! Next, the slide will encounter the firing pin safety lever. This must be pushed down into the recess in frame. The slide can now be fully moved to the rear. The slide can now be moved fully to the rear. This is why 10mm pistols with high performance are so popular. My S&W 1006 has been with me in such situations. It is heavy but it gives me some reassurance. My S&W 1006 was my weapon of choice for shooting at 100 yard targets. My brother and me walked to the target with our S&W 1006. Although we didn’t get a small group of shots, my brother said, “I wouldn’t want you shooting at us at 100 yards with that thing!” This is the nature 10mm S&W 1006. The 10mm S&W 1006 is a powerful handgun that shoots flat and hits hard. My brother and I walked to the target, and although we didn’t get a small group, my brother said, “I wouldn’t want you shooting at me at 100 yards with that thing!” The S&W 10mm pistols have a strong following. A nice Smith & Wesson 1006 will now cost between $1,000 and $1200, but they are rare. I once read this statement in a review of a certain automobile: “It is good mount for those who like to drive.” With regard to the S&W 1006, my comment is that “it is a good handgun for those who like power and performance.”Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared in the March 2022 issue of Gun Digest the Magazine.More Handgun Reviews:NEXT STEP: Download Your Free Storm Tactical Printable Target Pack62 Printable MOA Targets with DOT Drills – Rifle Range in YARDSThis impressive target pack from our friends at Storm Tactical contains62 printable targetsfor rifle and handgun range use.
