This gun is unique. It has a unique build history. This one happened by chance. I would shoot at least two club matches per month, the Second Chance Pin Shoot, and a few (or more) USPSA Nationals. I was shooting a lot and winning a lot. One of the prizes, I think it was from a USPSA Nationals, was a certificate good to a hi-cap frame in SVI/Infinity. The custom single stack Infinity is.40 S&W. Well, I already had a lot of hi-cap frames. So I donned my best smiley-face and serious competitor look and asked the Infinity guys to do it as a single stack. In.40 caliber. Because the Single Stack Nationals was being spun up into a USPSA Nationals and all the big dogs were competing with.40 caliber. I found out later that the big dogs were winning with the.40s, not because they had an inherent advantage, but because they all had been loading and shooting.38 Super ammo for so many years that they didn’t have a.45 or couldn’t find the components and dies in their loading rooms. I told him that I had a basket of SVI/Infinity parts and that I would build the frame with those parts. I had a slide, barrel and a few grip safetyties. It was enough to make a 1911. “Forget it; just pack up the SVI and ship it. We’ll add the rest.” You won’t be able to find any wobble or looseness in the fit. It’s actually gold in color. That’s the TiN coating. I have it your way A few weeks later, I receive an email. It turns out that building a house involves more than just assembling the parts. There are many choices I must make. I start to list. A stainless slide in two-tone with a recessed panel just before the rear cocking serrations. Thank you very much for omitting the front serrations. The top is tri-top and not standard radius. Red fiber-optic front sight with Infinity adjustable rear. The bushing is standard Browning but the guide rod is as large as Infinity can fit in there. The frame was to consist of a single stack carbon steel, blued with an extended dust cover and snub nose ball-end cut on slide to match. The barrel is covered by a full-length stainless steel guide rod. It adds weight and dampens the felt recoil. Because I was expecting to use this barrel in IDPA and USPSA, the barrel isn’t a bull barrel but a bushing one. (At the very least, that’s my memory. Things could be different today as rules change. The integrally ramped barrel and Wilson magazines ensure reliable feeding. The Infinity AET barrel works well with lead bullets so it is possible to practice at home. We discovered that the.40 caliber could be quite grumpy around the edges of the performance envelope. To make Major, you should load the most powerful bullets with the fastest-burning powders. However, this could lead to cases being blown. The 180-grain (we all gave-up on 200-grain bullets after blowing too many cases) bullet is seated long, about halfway between the lengths of the stock.40 cartridge, and the 10mm length. This allows for smooth and reliable feeding while still allowing the use of dirt-cheap.40 brass. Many police departments switched to.40 back then. Once-fired brass could be bought almost at the same weight as scrap metal. The rifling is more forward than it would be on a stock.40, but the longer bullet seats place the bullet higher to the rifling, so accuracy is not lost. The thumb safety and Ed Brown grip safety are perfectly fitted on the back. The gap (a very fine line, actually) between the grip safety and the frame is perfect. At that point, the bottom curve of thumb safety matches the curve on the frame. The thumb safety clicks up and down and stays down even when my thumb isn’t on it. Both the thumb safety as well as the grip safety fit perfectly. The shaft of the thumb security, which is located on the right side, is flush with the frame. At 20 lpi, the mainspring housing is flattened and checked. I chose not to have Infinity install a magazine well funnel because I had my ideas about what constitutes a good mag funnel. It never happened because I was too busy writing. So it is a magwell opening. One day…Topnotch TriggerThe hammer-trigger system is exceptional. First, the fire control parts are largely wire EDM manufactured. This is where they take a pre-hardened plate and use a wire cutting tool to create the shape of the hammer and other parts from the plate to the highest tolerances. You are only making it worse if you are old-fashioned and try to “tune up the hooks of a hammer or the nose of a sear with a stone.” It’s not getting better. The Infinity trigger is a two-piece unit. The bow and its seat deliver your trigger-press pressure back into the sear. The bow, or face of the trigger, is the second. Infinity can make triggers in any size or shape you want, and even in different colors. Flat-cased triggers are my preference. They have a longer length so that people with smaller hands can reach the trigger face. This single-stack Infinity is a competition gun that was built by competition shooters. The grips are made of black VZ Grips with double-diamond VZ grips and are held in place using Torx-head grip screw heads that have been serrated around the edges. I also requested a special serial #. You can do everything, or most, by simply going to the Infinity gunbuilder section of their website. You can pick what you want, they even have photos of it. Once you submit your build, they will send you a price and a delivery time quote. What I ended with was a tailored jacket that would not fit anyone but me. You bet. It’s easy to identify who it belongs to. Yes, it’s a.45 magazine that can feed.40s. Why? Because it works. We are used to testing the fit of a 1911 slide to frame by trying to move the slide around on the frame. This is a waste of time. But 1911 mavens expect this and check fit in a different way. We feel for friction as the slide moves and rack it. Slowly moving the slide around on the frame will allow you to feel how many toolmarks are present, how large they are, and what kind of differential they have to base dimensions. For all the toolmarks you might want to find, the slide could be running on well-greased bearings. Then there’s the amateur test of pressing down on the barrel to lock the slide in place. Pu-leeze.Infinity SingleStack On The RangeI’d love for you to share stories of matches won and lost with this amazing piece of firearms art. Unfortunately, I started my full-time writing career soon after it arrived. I have never shot it in a Single Stack Nationals. It shoots one-hole groups up to 25 yards with any ammo you give it, which is pretty much all I could feed it. It’s still working perfectly. The 1911 is also a beautiful looking 1911. The.40 has an alarm clock. The single stack Infinity feeds.40 S&W ammunition from Wilson Combat. 45 ACP mags. However, there are no new.40 pistols in development or production. The.40 would be the same as Caesar, but slower, when I had it built. FBI, thank you for everything. I could have had it done with the Infinity replaceable breechface on some guns. The barrel and barrel would then be fitted and motor on. (Okay, the serial number is a minor problem, but what can you do? So here I am with the problem of a custom-made gun in a cartridge with a date. It would take a lot of effort to make it work with another cartridge. This is life. It is a wonderful way to live. Target grids and bullseye sizes can be downloaded in MOA. This is a great option for long-range shooting. Enter your email address below.
