Wind Speed vs. Wind Direction — Which is more important?

April 9, 2023Wind Direction Vs. Speed — What Matters Most?Wind-Reading Lesson From Bryan LitzQ: Which is more important?A: Both matter, but wind speed and direction do have a trade off. A 10 mph wind blowing between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. is changing its value only from 9.7 to 10.7 to 9.7 mph (bracket 0.3 mph). A 10 mph wind blowing between 11:30 and 12:30 changes its cross wind component value, changing it from 2.6 to zero to 2.6 to 5.2 mph (bracket 5.2 mph). The same 30? The same 30? A slight direction change at 3 or 9 o’clock is negligible. However, a change of wind speed near 3 or 9, however, can directly affect your crosswind component. A fluctuation in wind speed is only noticeable for a tail or head wind. It has a minimal effect on the crosswind component. You will need to know the exact direction if you are closer to a tail- or head-wind.
