This load achieves 3800 FPS and excellent accuracy. “.17 Remington AR-15 – Small Bullet, Ultra High Velocity” The.17 Remington wildcat was developed from the.223 Remington casing, which has been necked down to only.172″, with the shoulder moved forward. The.17 Remington is characterized by its high muzzle velocity (4000+ fps), flat trajectory and low recoil. The.17 Remington has a maximum range of 440 yards for prairie dog-sized game, but its low BCs make it vulnerable to crosswinds. This Varminter.com Video was created in spring of 2022, right in time for Rockchuck, Thermal Coyote, and other hunting seasons. The host said: “This was not my first experience with.17 Remington but I knew its history and popularity among predator and varmint hunters.” It is difficult to find an affordable and available.17 Remington bolt action rifle these days, but building one on an AR-15 was easy and straightforward. A AR chambered in.17 WSM might be the answer. Eric Mayer, Varminter.com, states that the Franklin Armory F17L in.17 Winchester Super Magnum has many firsts. It is the first semiautomatic rifle available to the public in.17 WSM. The first AR-15 rimfire gas-piston rifle was built in partnership by Franklin Armory & Osprey Defense. “Eric has used.17 WSM to shoot ground squirrels and rock squirrels. He’s also shot prairie dogs and rabbits with the AR. Eric says: “The.17 WSM’s report is not as loud as the majority of centerfire [varmint] ammunition. When I shot the FA-17 it didn’t cause the other ground squirrels to run for cover. The lack of recoil allowed me to see exactly where I hit. If I missed, [low recoil] allowed for quick corrections to wind or distance.” READ the Full ReportSee the size difference above. Eric Mayer built his own custom.17 WSM AR-15 Varmint Rifle, using a Franklin Armory.17-V4 upper, Aero Precision lower, and Magpul stocks. This was used by California and Arizona. You can easily convert your.223 Rem cartridge to a.20 Cal by necking down the brass and fitting it into a.20 Cal barrel. Robert Whitley says that the.20 Practical is “a perfect cartridge for general shooting and varmint hunting — very accurate and quick! It is 100% compatible with an AR-15. “The.20 Practical has some notable advantages for high volume varmint hunters. The.20 Practical offers a very high velocity and low recoil, while still delivering outstanding accuracy. The.20 Practical is a great choice for those who prefer “fast and lightweight” bullets that travel at high speeds. This cartridge can fire 40-grainers with speeds of over 3900 FPS and 32-grainers with even higher speeds. The.20 Practical is a great choice when it comes to an AR-based varmint gun.

A decade ago, AccurateShooter.com designed a.20 Practical AR15 Ultima Varminter, with a 20-caliber upper custom-made by Robert Whitley, of AR-X Enterprises, LLC. This project rifle was extremely accurate — every 5-shot group was smaller than the size a dime. The gun was sold, but Robert Whitley still produces 20 Practical AR-15 uppers. You can make.20 Practical cartridges by necking down.223 Rem cases to.20. You can use standard.223 Rem cases and even load them with standard dies. You can use smaller neck bushings and a smaller expander. Prairie Dog Hunt with.204 Ruger – Watch the P-Dogs fly This video was made during a 2018 Prairie Dog Safari.
