Nearly half of Americans oppose the “assault weapon” ban

This news will not be welcomed by President Joe Biden or his gun control advisers. One of the most reliable and accurate polling organizations found that more Americans opposed than supported one of President Biden’s top gun-control goals. Monmouth found that nearly half of Americans, 49 percent, oppose a federal ban on “assault weapons”. The poll was released just days after President Obama called for a ban on modern sporting rifles (MSRs).

Trend: Opposition to a Ban on “Assault Weapons”

“In 1994, i led the fight for a successful ban on assault weapons… we know the solution. Joe Biden, President of the United States, tweeted last month that Republicans in Congress need to show courage.

But the American public is not so sure. Monmouth’s poll shows Americans do not want a ban. It’s a new trend. The data shows a nine-point decline in support for a ban on America’s top-selling semiautomatic centerfire rifle in the last year. The new polling shows a seven-point rise in opposition to a federal ban.

Earlier this summer, NSSF reported that polling by the Washington Post, ABC News and Quinnipiac showed similar sentiments.

Quinnipiac’s poll showed that 51 percent of Americans were against a ban. “While President Joe Biden calls on Congress to renew a long-expired assault weapons ban, the public is now divided on the issue …,”,” the report stated.

It’s true. The president continues to ask Congress to reinstate the federal “assault weapon” ban of 1994 that expired in 2004. He has admitted that he is “powerless” on gun control and has done everything he can through executive action.

“Assault weapon” ban – Tried but failed

What the president does not admit is that MSR’s popularity has increased exponentially since the previous ban expired, in 2004. In the last few years, law abiding Americans have bought firearms at an astronomical rate. The MSR was also a popular choice, even among first-time firearm owners.

More than 24 million MSRs have been in circulation since 1990. Over 4.5 million of these MSRs were sold in the last three year alone.

Research also revealed that the expired ban did not have the desired effect. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that the 1994 gun ban did not reduce crimes and that the impact of renewing the ban on gun violence would be “too little for reliable measurement.”

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report reveals that more murders are committed with knives, fists and blunt objects, not just MSRs such as the AR-15, than by firearms of any type.

Definition Confusion

MSRs are becoming more popular among law-abiding Americans. It’s the same semiautomatic, one-trigger-pull-one-fire technology that’s been around for more than a century.

MSRs are popular for hunting, target shooting and self-defense due to their adaptability. Women prefer an adjustable, accurate, easy to handle firearm with less recoil.

While Democrats in Congress are still baffled by the types of firearms that they want to ban, they continue to be confused. David Chipman, President Biden’s nominee to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, could not define an “assault weapons” when pressed by Senators during his confirmation hearing.

This is despite the fact that he is a retired ATF Agent and a paid gun control lobbyist for Everytown for Gun Safety and Giffords Law Center for Preventing Gun Violence. He still wanted to ban it, even though he didn’t understand what it was.

Miguel Cardona has also called for the ban of “assault weaponry” in recent times. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Myorkas also refused to define this term during a hearing before a U.S. Senate Committee.

In a previous testimony, ATF Director Dettelbach had been asked to define an “assault weapons” but he refused. He refused to give Congress a definition. Dettelbach’s question was repeated at a subsequent hearing of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.

Sheila Jackson Lee, a U.S. Representative, tried to convince the director that “assault weapon” should be banned because of their looks. He replied that Congress is responsible for defining firearm classifications.

Members of Congress who want to ban firearms and firearm accessories are always mislabeling, misidentifying, and confusing what they do and are.

States move flaw laws forward

It hasn’t prevented some states from passing laws that restrict the manufacture, sale and possession of MSRs. Nine states have banned MSRs. The two most recent are Illinois and Washington State.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed into law the most comprehensive gun control law in the country. It bans the sales of hundreds of rifle models, including MSRs commonly owned by Americans, certain semiautomatic pistols and rifle magazines that hold more than 10 cartridges or pistol magazines that hold more than 15 cartridges.

NSSF successfully challenged the unconstitutional prohibition. A federal judge blocked its implementation while other legal challenges are being litigated.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington, signed a similar law in his state. You only need an AR-15 to kill other families.”

NSSF filed a lawsuit quickly against Washington State Attorney-General Robert Ferguson and Chief Washington State Patrol John Batiste, seeking declaratory and interim relief from state authorities enforcing law.

In the coming months, the U.S. Supreme Court could decide to hear the question of banning firearms owned by the general public. U.S. Supreme Court Associate justice Amy Coney Barrett asked the city of Naperville to respond to an urgent request for an injunction aimed at the city’s “assault weapons” ban.

The Reload reported that at least one justice wanted to hear more information about a legal challenge before the High Court decided whether or not it would weigh in.

Polls show that the American public is aware of the fact that any ban on marijuana would be unconstitutional, and would not make communities safer but only less free.
