On Memorial Day, thousands of Americans will be standing by at dawn to raise the American flag quickly to the top of flagstaffs to catch the first rays of sunlight. Old Glory will then be lowered to half-staff until noon. The halyards will then be reversed. The day of remembrance was first designated to honor the soldiers who died on both sides in the Civil War. It was originally known as “Decoration Day.” However, the honor was later extended to include all American servicemen and women who have died in the war between the states.
Arlington Cemetery is 624 acres.
The American flag is displayed at half-staff for a reason. Our national flag will never be lowered for a living ruler, potentate or king. It is only lowered as a sign of national grief in honor of the great Americans and patriots who have served their country with honor and duty. It is an insult to those who have done so. Old Glory will only pull its lines until noon, halfway between the ground at the base of the pole and the eagle on top. This is to welcome the few Americans that enter the hallowed ground in order to pay their respects to our honored dead. Our Star-Spangled banner silently hears people’s prayers and thanksgiving utterances. They know that freedom isn’t free but paid for in full by men and women buried in the earth, marked only by brass plaques and small flags placed by caring citizens.
After a morning reflection, the Stars and Stripes are raised to full-staff for the rest of the day and preside over local ceremonies, speeches, and dedications by veterans, politicians, and other citizens who pledge to not let the sacrifices of our warriors go in vain and to continue their steadfast commitment of continuing the fight for freedom, justice, and liberty. While others give speeches or listen to them, or grab a hotdog at the beach, other Americans relax in the security and safety of their homes. They have never felt threatened by a foreign military. These Americans are the many Americans who live in a country free and without war or enemy soldiers. Most Americans are inexplicably unappreciative to those who have given their lives for them. Even with our safety, wealth, and peace, only a few Americans stop to thank the soldiers, marines, sailors and Coasties who gave their lives for this country.
We at PersonalDefenseWorld.com wish everybody a great Memorial Day. We recognize that both national defense and personal defense are protected rights under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Both are exemplified in the Americans who gave their lives to defend our country and way of life. The sacrifices of American warfighters were to protect the Constitution, and ensure that our rights and freedoms, as clearly written by our founders, are respected and upheld in their original form and written, and not diminished or altered by lesser men and woman. We must maintain the strength of this great country, as envisioned by its founding fathers and guided by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This includes the Confederates who were killed in Pickett’s Charge and the Marines who died during the advance in Belleau Wood. It also includes the sailors who are still entombed on the USS Arizona and the soldiers who froze to death in their foxholes near Bastogne.
Please thank and honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day, as we at PersonalDefenseWorld.com will. Continue reading
