Custom-Honed Full Length Sizing Dies — Benefits over Bushings

June 10th, 2023Custom honed full-length sizing dies — Benefits over bushingsFor some applications, we prefer a non-bushing FL die over a bushing die. Three Forster full length sizing Dies are shown here, with necks honed in three different dimensions: 0.265″, 0.2666″ and 0.2667″.The Honed Full Length Sizing OptionThere are a lot of options when it comes to full-length (FL sizing) dies. Most precision handloaders prefer FL dies that have neck bushings. You can adjust the “grip”, or the grip of your bullet, by using larger or small bushings. FL bushings are available from Whidden Gunworks, Forster, Redding, and other manufacturers. Conventional, non-bushing, full-length sizing can produce ultra-accurate ammunition with very low run-out. Many conventional FL dies are undersized, resulting in excessive neck tension and brass work. The honed FL is a full length sizing die with the necked honed for a precise fit on the case-neck. When done correctly, honed FL-dies produce very straight ammo – as there are no problems with bushing alignment or bushings not perfectly concentric. This Editor has honed Dies from Forster Redding and Whidden Gunworks. They all perform exceptionally well, delivering match ammo with extremely low runout measured with a 21st Century Concentricity gauge. In one of our most popular articles, Bugholes From Bipod, California shooter “Froggy” explained why he preferred honed-dies for his tactical ammunition. Q: Do your dies always fit the FL size? Do you use custom-made dies? I always resize my brass to the fullest extent possible every time I reload. Guess what? I’ve never had any feeding problems. I use a modified die without bushings. My FL resizing tool has been custom-honed at the neck area for.0015? Press fit the bullet. I also added a slightly larger radius at the neck-shoulder junction. This, I believe, helps seal the chamber. This die gives me consistent neck tension without bushings. Bushings can be useful when you are fishing for a good load. Once you’ve found the ideal neck tension and the right amount of sizing, a custom FL die will help you achieve this.

The 6.5 Guys reviewed Forster’s honed FL dies, explaining their pros and cons. They said that if you load bullets from a variety of manufacturers, you may want to stick with the Bushing FL die. If you’ve settled on a bullet and determined the “ideal neck tension”, then a honed Die may make sense. In this Gear Update the 6.5 Guys discuss the service offered by Forster Products, which allows the neck diameter to be honed to the specifications of the customer (to the thousandth). Whidden Gunworks offers custom-honed FL Dies.
