Be Careful This Season — Help Prevent Wildfires

Smoke from massive forest fires burning in Canada drifted south and affected the Northeast USA. This highlights the importance of preventing wildfires. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, there were 68.988 wildfires that burned over 7.5 million acres in 2022. These conflagrations – an increase of over 10,000 wildfires from 2021 – caused billions in damage and hardship for both humans and wildlife. NSSF reminds hunters and target shooters to take precautions in order to avoid accidentally igniting a wildfire. Human actions are responsible for 90 percent of all wildland fires that occur in the United States.1. Be aware of all restrictions on shooting or other activities in areas prone to fire.

2. Use only ammunition that does not contain steel core components or steel jacketed tracer rounds.

3. Be aware that the hot exhaust system of a car, ATV, or truck can ignite dry vegetation. Stay on the road whenever possible. Do not park in the wilderness and only use designated parking areas.

4. The NSSF’s Help Prevent Wildfires campaign reminds outdoor enthusiasts and recreational shooters to be aware of their surroundings and follow the key precautions outlined below. Wildfires can be tragic in a number of ways. Most wildfires are preventable if people pay close attention to their surroundings and practice safe practices.
