Saturday at the movies: How to Bore Sight Your Rifles

Saturday, July 29, 2023: How to Bore Sight Your RiflesToday’s video showcase covers bore sighting methods and technologies. Bore-sighting is easy to do the old-fashioned method of looking down the rifle’s bore at a target. Visual bore-sighting is easy and quick with a bolt-action rifle. Rest your rifle securely on bags. Remove your bolt. Set up a target at 50 yards with a large, bright orange or black circle in the center. You can sight down the bore by looking through the back of your action. No expensive hardware is required. It may be easier to bore sight the “old-fashioned” way than trying to see a bright laser at 50 yards (or 25 yards). A modern laser bore-sighting tool can be very useful in this situation. We recommend a laser-based bore-sighter for those situations when a bore-sighting device is required. A laser device that fits inside the chamber, such as the one shown below, can be useful and poses less of a safety risk than an end-of-barrel tool. Set up a 50-yard (or closer) target from your shooting position. Assemble the rifle so that it is stable and well-supported. Once the target is perfectly centered on the BORE of your barrel, adjust the scope’s reticle to center the crosshairs in the middle of the target. After checking downrange, fire a few test shots. Then, move the target to 100 yards, and confirm your zero. This is explained at the end of this article.Vortex shows how to bore-sight rifles. This well-made video from Vortex covers basic bore-sighting. Bore-sighting your rifle can be a quick and easy way to establish a zero, which will help you hit the target faster. It also saves you ammunition at the range. It doesn’t require a lot of gear or ammunition to bore sight a rifle. This 10-minute video from Vortex’s Jimmy provides a step-by-step guide. Bore-Sighting with a Barrel Mounted Laser Bore-Sighter Have you ever wondered why the laser bore-sighter on a barrel was not centered? This video will show you how to zero a scope safely and correctly using a barrel mounted laser bore sight device. A small laser cartridge that fits into the chamber is another option. These lasers are available for less than $25.00. They are also convenient. In-chamber lasers have safety benefits. Initial Bore-Sighting (Before you Head to the Range). This video shows how to bore sight a rifle. This will save you time (and money on ammo) at the range when you confirm your scope’s accuracy. This procedure is best done at home when the target is well lit and the rifle is in shadow, creating the best contrast. Bore-Sighting a Red Dot Sight or Reflex Optic As with conventional scopes and red dot sights, you will need to bore-sight the rifle, then zero your optic. [Reflex sights project a dot onto the target using a reflex lens, while red dot sights display a red-dot reticle on a flat, reflective surface.] In this video retired Navy SEAL Mark Cochiolo shows how to bore-sight and then adjust a reticle. Learn More about Bore Sighting with ToolsTo find out more about bore sighting, visit the Warne Scope Mounts site. This article includes images of laser beams projected down range from tools that can be fitted in the barrel or chamber. Below are projecting lasers in cartridge size that fit into a rifle chamber. These are available in a variety of sizes. Any obstruction in the barrel could cause serious injury or death if you fire. Many gun shops and gunsmiths use the Bushnell Bore Sight With Arbors as a bore-sighting device. This device transmits a laser but uses arbors. Attach the tool to the barrel end and align it with the scope. The bore-sighter has a grid inside. Align your scope’s reticle to the grid by looking at it. This Bushnell unit comes with three expandable arbors, in 22-270, 7mm-35, and 3545 calibers. How to Zero a Hunter’s Rifle EfficientlyOnce your rifle has been bore-sighted to ensure that you are “on target”, you will want to zero your optical system so that your shot falls exactly where it should at your target range, which is typically 100 yards. This Vortex video will show you how to sight-in and zero your hunting rifle quickly and efficiently before heading out in the field. This video shows you how to get a solid zero with just three shots. You may want to fire more rounds to confirm the zero before heading to your hunting grounds. However, this method will allow you to get on target with minimal time and ammunition. This video has now been viewed 3.2 million times on YouTube! Fouling shots and cold bore condition

Before you begin, you may wish to fire two or even three fouling shots if you have just cleaned your rifle. You want to replicate the cold bore conditions you will experience on the hunt.
