The answer is “yes” in some disciplines and venues that allow sound “moderators”. You’ll find a fascinating article in a previous edition of Shooting Sports USA magazine about the use sound suppressors, also known as “cans”. The article discusses the use and application of suppressors both in Europe and North America. You’ll find an explanation of the rules governing the ownership and use of suppressors in the United States. Chip Lohman, Editor of Shooting Sports Magazine, tested three rifles on a bench and found out that sound suppressors didn’t affect accuracy. All three rifles tested (one each of.223 Rem.308 win.338 Lapua magnum) shot slightly better five-shot groups at 200 yard when a suppressor is fitted to the barrel. The suppressors did change the point of impact. It is interesting to note that the velocity standard deviations (SD) were lower for all three rifles when suppressors were in place. In the United States, however, the current NRA rules prohibit sound suppressors. NRA Rule 3.16.1 sub-section (a) states that “Sound suppressors are not permitted for use in High Power Competition.” There are also some practical issues with suppressors – the heat rising from a naked suppressor may cause mirage problems. (That’s why some shooters cover their cans). Many competitors in the Steel Safari Field Challenge match use suppressors. Commentary — What can we conclude?This SSUSA three-rifle test was not conclusive. You may see different results when using different types of suppressors on different types of rifles. Mounting a silencer to any barrel will affect harmonics and tune. This article warns against extrapolating too much from the SD values, due to the small number of test shots. Chronograph-maker Ken Oehler, when asked to comment on the SD values stated: “[You should] report the observed SDs, but draw no conclusions until… you can do more testing with larger sample sizes.”Qualifications to Obtain a SuppressorTo legally obtain a suppressor, you must fill out Federal Forms and pay a $200 fee to the ATF. You must also pass the BATFE background check and comply with Federal and State laws. Check your local laws to see if they have any restrictions on suppressor use or ownership. The National Firearms Act of 1935 regulates the federal process of acquiring a suppressor.
