About the 7 FCP – New 7mm Cartridge Derived From 6.5 PRC In the fall of 2022, F-Class Products in Phoenix, Arizona designed a cartridge from scratch. The developers consider it the “ultimate” cartridge for the F Class Open Division competition. F-Class Products states: “We wanted to create a cartridge with a case capacity that was [equal] to the 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum. The 7 RSAUM cartridge has been the most successful in F-Class competitions around the world, as well as many nationals and final events. The RSAUM has a problem with brass availability. Remington stopped making brass years ago, and Norma recently stopped producing it. ADG is the only option. The ADG brass is good but it is expensive, and only available in small runs. The 7 FCP is designed to fire the 180 grain Berger Hybrid Bullet at 2960 FPS from a 30” barrel without excessive pressure. How does the 7 FCP compare in terms of case capacity?
F-Class Products says: “The parent casing of the 7 FCP was a 6.5 PRC. The 6.5 PRC magnum case has a head size of 0.532″ and an overall length of 2.20”. It has the same overall size as the 7 RSAUM, but a smaller body diameter. F-Class Products compared the capacity in cases used for F-Open competitions:.284 Winchester = 63 grain of water capacity
.284 Shehane = 66,5 grains of water capacity
6.5 PRC = 66 grains of water capacity
7-6.5 PRC= 66.5 grains of capacity for water As you can see from the data above, a 6.5 PRC that has been necked to a 7mm is not able to provide more capacity than.284 Shehane. The shoulder of the PRC is shifted forward to accommodate this. What powders work well in the 7mm FCP?
F-Class Products tested many powders in the 7 FCP. “Any powders which work well with a.284 win, a variant of.284 or a variant of 7 RSAUM can work well with the 7 FCP.” We have tested a variety of powders, and many work well. Here is a list that we have tested and found to be effective in both our testing and our customers’ testing.
Hodgdon H4831
Hodgdon Alliant Reloder 16
Alliant Reloder 23 Vihtavuori N160
Vihtavuori N550
Vihtavuori n555 This is a list of powders we believe will work and burn efficiently in the 7 FCP. There are many other powders which can also work but they may be temperature sensitive or not burn efficiently within the case.” What Velocities are Optimal?
F-Class Products observes: “With 180 grain Berger, we see accuracy between 2920-2980 FPS. With the 190 grain Hornady A Tip bullet, we see accuracy between 2860-2900 FPS. What Twist Rates Would You Recommend?
F-Class Products recommends 1:8.5″-twist barrels. A barrel with an 8-twist may work, but the accuracy nodes will be smaller than those with an 8.5-twist. If you are using a bullet weighing 184 grains or less, a barrel with 8.5 twist can work. These twist rates are recommended when using lead-cored bullets. Consult the bullet manufacturer for the recommended twist rate for a solid copper-cored bullet. What is the parent case?
The 7 FCP’s parent case is a 6.5 RRC. The 6.5 PRC magnum case has a head size of 0.532″ and an overall length of 2.20″. It has the same overall size as the 7 RSAUM, but a smaller body diameter. Without improving it, you won’t get the case capacity and velocity of a 7 RSAUM. Visit the 7 FCP Facebook Group for more information.
