A while back, Cal Zant at PrecisionRifleBlog.com did a big muzzle brake comparison test. Cal Zant’s team also recorded sound levels during PRB’s exhaustive field test of muzzle brakes. You can find the results of a comprehensive sound test on 20 different muzzle braces in the PRB archives.
Sound can be a tricky subject, but Cal Zant, the editor of PrecisionRifleBlog.com, presents everything an informed shooter should know about muzzle brake noise in a straightforward and practical way. Cal Zant measured the sound levels of each brake from behind the rifle, closer to the shooter’s position, as per mil-spec standards. Cal also measured each brake’s sound level from behind the rifle. This was closer to the position of the shooter. This gives a more accurate indication of the actual noise levels that firearms users will encounter when shooting their rifles.
Most active shooters will agree that muzzle brakes are loud. This study gives us objective comparisons and hard data. The difference was quite significant. Some brakes were louder than others, more than twice so.
Cal also provides a comparison of the sound levels behind the rifle for the new Ultra series suppressors by Thunder Beast Arms Corp.
