Flash-Hole Repair — Remove Case Flash Hole Obstructions

Even with high quality brass from Lapua Peterson Norma Alpha and RWS you may occasionally find one or more cases per box that have a small flake in the flash hole. This will look like a thin crescent at the side of the flash-hole (see photo). Before loading, you should inspect ALL brass to identify any pieces that have a partially-obstructed hole. It is a good idea remove any flake, or thin crescent, left by the flash-hole formation process. It is not necessary for the flash-hole, which is usually centered and the correct diameter, to be reammed to a larger size. You only need to remove the small obstructions. You can do this quickly and easily with inexpensive tools. Use a small pin vise to remove obstructions from flash-holesMany people have asked if it is possible to remove obstructions without opening a Lapua BR-sized small flash hole. The Lapua PPC/BR is specified at 1.5mm which is 0.059055″. Most PPC/BR uniforming tools use a 1/16″ bit, which is nominally 0.0625″. However, these are often oversized — up to 0.0666″. You can use a “pin vise” and an appropriate drill bit to remove any obstructions from the flash hole without increasing its diameter. eHobbyTools.com offers a 1.5mm drill, item 79186 for $0.99 ($0.50 during the sale) that matches the Lapua’s flash hole perfectly. Other vendors sell a #53 pinvise drill bit measuring.0595″ or.060″ (depending on the source). A 0.0595′” bit will do. Hobby stores sell pin vises as well as these small-diameter bits. Sinclair Int’l sells a similar device that is designed for small flash holes (PPC or BR size) since quite some time. The 073081 unit for large holes indexes off the primer pocket, just like the 073000 for small holes. It also costs $29.99 and reams up to.0625″. The standard size for Lapua Russian and 6mmBR Flash Holes is 1.5mm, or.0590″. This tool allows standard-size decapping pins with.0625″ tips to work without binding. Note that Forster and Redding usually supply.057″ decapping pins along with their PPC and BR Dies. It is not necessary to ream the Lapua BR/PPC Flashholes unless you want to achieve uniformity. It is a good idea, however, to check BR/PPC Flash Holes for burrs prior to loading the first time. NOTE: If you buy either the 073081 Sinclair Flash Hole Reamer or 073000 Sinclair Flash Hole Reamer, we recommend that you mic the cutter before you process a batch of cases. Sometimes, a tip is too large. This will make the flash holes bigger than you intended.
