Pistol Skills – How to Diagnose Handgun Accuracy Problems

August 7, 2021
Do your shots always land in the middle of the target when shooting pistols? If your shots are not hitting the target center, it could be a problem with your technique. Chris Cheng, Top Shot Champion, has created a video for the National Shooting Sports Foundation that helps handgunners identify accuracy issues. You can identify what is wrong or right by looking at 3-shot groups and the patterns and locations of the shots. Here are some examples. This process is best for shooters who have shots that fall within one target zone. If your shots are scattered around the target, it will be more difficult to diagnose problems.

1. Low Left — Jerking Trigger. We see three (3) shots at 7 O’clock. This indicates that the shooter has been jerking the trigger. It means that the shooter pulls the trigger too fast, causing the barrel to drop upon breaking the shot. This is a common problem for novices, especially if they react to the gun’s noise/recoil.

2. 9 O’Clock – Too Little Trigger Finger: Three (3) shots taken at the 9 O’clock position can indicate that there is too little trigger finger. The shots are being pushed to the right with each shot. Move your trigger finger to the pad of your index. Dry firing drills are also possible.

3. High Left — Anticipating Recoil. In the next example, there are three shots taken at 11 O’clock. This could indicate that the shooter anticipates the recoil and lifts the gun up as he shoots. We recommend slowing down and practicing dry-firing drills.

4. 3 O’Clock – Too Many Trigger Finger: Lastly, if you see three (3) shots at 3 O’clock, it could indicate that the trigger finger is too tight. The shooter is pulling each shot to their right when the shot breaks. These descriptions are for a right-handed shooter. These descriptions should be reversed if you are a left-handed shooter.
