The firing distances are 25 and 50 yards, and can be done in prone, standing, or sitting positions. Rimfire Sport matches are run efficiently, even with a large number of competitors. Rimfire Sporter competitors are allowed to fire in three different rifle categories. The O-class rifles must have open sight. T-Class rifles are equipped with scopes up to 6 power or receiver sights. The third class is TU Rimfire Class. The competitors can choose Single or Double entry options, and then select which rifle class they will fire. The firing distances are 50 and 25 yards, in prone, seated and standing positions. Both slow and rapid fire modes can be used. In each class, there are awards for the High Juniors and Seniors as well as the High Women.

All you need to compete is a basic rifle and safety gear. No expensive, fancy rifles are needed. The event is shot using standard sporter type, rimfire rimfire rifles that weigh no more than 7 1/2 pounds, with sights and the sling. Rifles can be semi-automatic or manually operated. Shooters who use manually-operated action are allowed extra time during the rapid-fire phase to compensate for this difference. There are three competition classes: the standard “O Class”, which is for open-sighted weapons, “T-Class”, for telescope-sighted or rear aperture-sighted weapons, and “Tactical Rimfire”, which is for.22 caliber AR15 or A4 style rifles. All classes fire at 25 and 50 yard ranges on a target that has a 1.78″ ten-ring, and an outer 18″ one-ring.
