After buying a new set from Forster, Hornady or Redding, you will need to disassemble the dies and inspect them. Then, remove any internal grease or waxy coatings that were placed on the dies. These videos show you how to clean and de-grease dies right out of the box. The first video, by Creedmoor Sports, shows Bill Gravatt, now President of Capstone Precision Group, demonstrating various methods to clean dies after use. This video is well worth the effort. Hornady technicians demonstrate how to degrease dies before they are used for the first time in the second video. The video uses an aerosol spray cleaner. You can also use a liquid solvent that contains soft nylon brush and cotton patches. NOTE: You may want to grease the dies’ external threads after cleaning.
Clean your Sizing Dies and Body Die Regularly. These same techniques can be used to clean dies after they have been used in reloading. Many hand-loaders, even the most skilled, forget to clean their dies. This can lead to contamination such as gunk, old case lube, carbon residue, and other contaminants. It is important to clean your dies regularly, especially if you don’t tumble or ultrasonic your cases between loadings. It is important to maintain full-length sizing as well as body dies. These dies quickly accumulate lube, carbon residue, and can be difficult to clean.
