Russian Guns and Ammo Imports Restricted as of September 7, 2021

August 24th 2021
Biden State Department has prohibited imports of Russian-made ammunition and firearms. Russian firearms and ammunition importation will be stopped for a minimum period of 12 months beginning September 7, 2021. The State Department Notice states that:
The CBW Act now contains new sanctions that include:
Restrictions on permanent imports of certain Russian firearms. A policy of denial will apply to all pending and new permit applications for permanent importation of Russian ammunition and firearms manufactured in Russia.
Gun Owners of America Will Be Harmful to U.S. Firearms Owners. The Gun Owners of America (GOA), criticized the action, saying it would not achieve its stated purpose and only harm American hunters, shooters, gun owners.
“It is evident to us that the intention was not to harm Russia, but to hinder American citizens’ acquisition of firearms or ammunition.
The Biden Administration’s actions again are misplaced. Stopping imports by licensed importers won’t stop drug dealers, murderers, or other street criminals. However, it will harm legitimate U.S. companies and increase the cost of ammunition due to more buyers chasing smaller supplies.
We are aware of the severe consequences these sanctions could have on gun owners in the face of a national shortage of ammunition. We are currently looking at administrative, congressional, as well as legal options to address these new sanctions.”

Ammo shortages will worsen
Dean Weingarten warns that the new ban could lead to increased ammo shortages.
“This is the second round sanctions that the United States has imposed on Russia in response to the Aleksey Navalny scandal. The first round of sanctions didn’t ban importation of Russian ammunition and firearms.
It is not clear how long the supplies will last. This announcement is likely to revive the ammunition bubble for calibers often imported from Russia such as 7.62×54 and 7.62×39, 5.45×39 and 5.56×45, as well as match grade.22 ammunition.
