Every prone shooter should review the SSUSA article, regardless of whether they shoot an air rifle, smallbore or high power. This article, How to Master Prone Shooting was compiled with the help of some the country’s top prone marksmen. It provides a step by step guide to perfecting your prone position technique.
How to Master Prone Shooting – SSUSA by NRA staffThe prone position is one of the most precise positions for rifle shooting. It can be used for shooting at distances up to 5m and 1,000 yards. Long-range disciplines like PRS and NRL also use it. Because it doesn’t require as much practice, prone shooting is very popular with shooters who have limited training time. Shooters’ age does not affect their ability to perform well in prone. Many older shooters can continue to compete in prone matches.
Here’s a sample listing STEP ONE, which is the basic position for prone.
Step 1: Examine the Position
Because it is low, the prone position is stable. This provides a large base of support to keep the rifle still. Here are some key features of the prone posture.
1. Straight line from left hand to left arm, side, and leg.
2. Keep your head comfortably lowered.
3. Right hand grips rifle easily.
4. Body lies behind rifle. Angle between rifle and body is 10 to 20 degrees.
5. Toe pointed out, right knee bent slightly.
6. 6.
7. Left elbow rests to the left of the rifle
8. If present, sling supports weight of rifle. Left arm should be relaxed.
9. The left side of the body is slightly more relaxed than the right.
10. Left leg straight, toe pointing inward or straight back.
The FULL Article explains FIVE more steps and outlines specific actions. For example, STEP FOUR (Sling Adjustment) explains that you should “Put your sling high on your arm and tighten the strap keeper.” Wrap your arm around the sling, so that it touches your left hand and forearm.
