Are you enjoying the short window of ammunition availability? We hate to say this, but we fear that the shortages could return in as little as two weeks. Yes, creepy Joe struck again with a ban on Russian ammunition. The sanction will be in effect on September 7th. Details of the final details will be made then. It is unlikely that it will include all of Russia, even though it names only two Russian companies. Even if it includes only one, the U.S. will experience at least a 50% drop in the availability of the steel-cased ammunition that we love to dump at our range. This will affect all shooters in the U.S., even if they don’t use steel ammunition.

Russia’s Import Ban: What Do We Know?
We won’t go into detail about the sanction but you can find all the information at the State Department Fact Sheet. The short version is that Russia poisoned Aleksey Navalny to stop him from being a corrupt activist. Our government then sanctioned the state with a ban on ammunition, one of the smallest exports. Anyone for creative gun control?
The sanctions will remain in effect for at most 12 months. It will be lifted if Russia clears major hurdles, including allowing UN inspectors into Russia to verify if it has chemical or biological weapons. Yes, Putin will be all for it come September. It sounds more like “Just two week to flatten the curve.”
Let’s get back to the story. If you’re reading this, and you think “who cares?” then you might want to reconsider that attitude. What is the secret to American Eagle and Winchester White Box’s low prices? Their only real competition is Russian steel-cased ammunition.
It doesn’t need to be much more than the premium loads of companies to be “the cheaper stuff.” Unfortunately, raw material prices are on the rise and this is a necessary move to keep the company afloat. Good news is that you won’t have pay those prices for quite some time. Good luck finding any. Your competition pool is now full of frugal steel shooters. They will pick up whatever is the cheapest, even your favorite brass-cased plinking gun.
This shortage means you can’t reload.
You’ll just have to reload, right? There has been more bad news this year than loaded ammunition, particularly primers. This situation is only going to get worse, as millions of gun owners will be trying to find supplies. This will also apply to tools. Each of these new reloaders will require a press and a set of dies. So I hope you got yours already. This sanction will likely also ban the import of Russian primers. This will eliminate the little hope we had of ending this sub-shortage. The final nail in the coffin of the sub-shortage is that American ammunition companies will have to increase production to fill the ammunition market gap. This will leave even fewer primers for consumers to purchase.
You might not be a gun owner, but you enjoy renting ranges. Maybe you just take a course every now and again. What do you think is the best range fodder for firearms instruction businesses? Bingo. Let’s take my personal company as an illustration. I would like to claim that we have a unique business model but that would be lying. We do things the same way as everyone else.
Renaissance Firearms Instruction eats pallets of this Slavic gunfood every year. Every two-hour AR-15 or Historic Military Firearms Shoot, we run at least 500 rounds. Ammunition costs rise by 105 percent when ammunition is switched from steel to brass-cased ammo. Who is going to pay that? You, the shooter. And not just those who are taking these courses, but all shooters. Because thousands of certificates were sold this year and that cost must be recouped at all costs. A Renaissance Firearms Instruction might not be possible next year if this happens.
We are being hit where it hurts
“At this time (until September 7th), we don’t know how much this will affect the importers Russian ammo,” stated President Charles Brown of MKS Supply, an importer Barnaul ammo. Because of its low prices, Russian steel cases make up 35% of all ammo sold. Now there will be a shortage not only of 7.62×39, but also of 5.56,.308, and.300 blackout, as well as.30-06 for most common pistol calibers. This will increase demand and push prices higher than they already are.
Brown said, “We are aware that this order is up to review/renew in 12 months. But I suspect there will some legal actions because as we all know, these’sanctions’ have nothing to do the poisoning and everything do with hurting legitimate American companies.” “MKS will be severely hurt, as we are one the largest importers Russian ammo. This will also impact the American sportsman’s ability find and purchase affordable sporting ammo.”
All current Form 6s (import permit) are valid at the moment. However, it is not clear how long each U.S. company has to keep theirs valid. It’s almost irrelevant if you think about it. Most shooters will try to grab at most a year’s supply if it goes blip at online retailers. Although Russia will be a scourge and do whatever the Biden administration wants to regain the U.S. market, it’s not like Russia cannot find another market.
This damage control was in the form U.S.-dealt Punishment. Nothing is stopping them arming their enemies to keep their manufacturers afloat. Every American should be involved in this matter, perhaps for that reason alone. My friends, make the usual phone calls and send the usual emails. Keep your eyes open.
