Grant Guess, our friend, had a “close encounter”, a few years ago, with a bad primer. A defective primer caused a part of Grant’s casehead to blow out on one of his rounds. This allowed high pressure gas to escape through the damaged primer pocket. Girls and boys, take a look. This is another reason to wear safety glasses every time you shoot. The cartridge was a 6.506 and was handloaded in necked Winchester-headstamp.270 Win brass. Grant reports:
“I had a blowthrough between the primer pocket and the primer pocket today. The action was great and I got a lot of gas. This was a fairly light charge. Safety glasses are a blessing from God.
It appears that there is a 3/64 gap halfway between the primer pocket and the primer. It seems like it blew a small jet hole through them both.
Could this be you? It could happen. Chris D., Grant’s Facebook friend, commented on the case: “You will find a lot of these pinhole ‘inthe corner’ failures when you search the internet. Winchester clearly has issues with the LR primers.
A Primer Defect Found After Careful Examination There was clearly a defect in the primer. It doesn’t take a lot of defects to cause problems at [50,000 CUP]. On the next shot ….”, there was a little pucker-factor.
