Sig Sauer is a swaggering king of the handgun market. Exeter, New Hampshire has become the epicenter for handguns. This is hard to refute, as the P320 and P365 product lines have a Midas-like touch. Legacy models like the P210, P220, and P226 have loyal followings. The polymer striker-fired Sig P320 quickly became a leader in duty and personal defense handguns. This was after the Sig P320 arrived on the market in 2014. This position was solidified by its selection as the U.S Army’s new sidearm via Modular Handgun System (MHS). All other branches of the U.S. military adopted the P320 in either its M17 or modified M18 form. The Sig Sauer P320 AXG Scorpion is now available.

The Sig Sauer P320 AXG Scorpion
It is difficult to express the pride that Ron Cohen, CEO of Sig Sauer, felt when he arrived at the factory floor to discuss the selection M17/M18 to be our military’s sidearm. Cohen and many others at Sig Sauer served in the U.S. military as well as our allies’ services. It is an incredible feeling to provide a sidearm that has been selected after extensive testing and millions of rounds have been fired since its inception.
Sig Sauer currently has over 1,800 employees. They are located in a variety of facilities across five U.S. States and two other countries, Germany and Switzerland. The company’s headquarters is located in Exeter (New Hampshire). Sig’s horizontal business strategy, which involves creating/acquiring divisions focusing on suppressors. Ammunition, optics, and training, is paying real dividends. This is evident in the MHS contract award and several other military/LE solicitation successes both in the United States of America and around the globe. Sig is the United States’ largest exporter of small arms with products in over 80 countries.
Sig is known for not resting on its laurels. Sig is always pushing the boundaries and introduces new variants to existing weapons to satisfy everyone’s needs. This is done by combining/adding features that are based on customer requests from law enforcement, tactical, law enforcement, and personal defense customers. To create a new model that is successful, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. There are currently 13 P320 variations on the Sig website. The Sig P320 AXG Scorpion (Alloy X-Series Grip Scorpion) is the newest entry.
The Heart of the Matter
All Sig P320s are powered by the fire control mechanism, or “chassis”. The pistol’s chassis is the one that bears the serial number marking. The fire control chassis can be fitted into a grip module. The chassis allows the Sig P320 to be modular between different models’ frames and slides. The trigger mechanism, hammer, and slide catches are all contained in the chassis. The slide assembly is not interconnected with the grip module, but it operates along the chassis’ steel rails that guide it. The rails are located on both the front and rear sides of the chassis.
It is simple to swap between grip module types using the fire control chassis without any tools. Rotate the takedown lever to remove the slide. Turn the takedown lever and pull out simultaneously. This will release the fire control chassis. Pull/push it upwards while pulling the trigger shoe backwards. You are done. The Sig literature highlights an important fact: the P320 can be field stripped with no tools required or the need to pull the trigger.
Separating from the Pack
The new P320 AXG Scorpion brings an enhanced level of performance to P320’s P320 line. The Sig Custom Works offering is the 320 AXG Scorpion. The P320 AXG Scorpion is part of the Sig X-Series P320s. The P320 AXG Scorpion was designed by Sig Custom Works to be distinctive from its P320 brethren. The P320 AXG Scorpion is not only distinctive from its P320 brethren, but also has additional features. The P320 AXG Scorpion comes with three 17-round magazines, which are placed in a Custom Works box. The package also contains a Challenge Coin as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.
The P320 AXG comes with a metal alloy grip unit. The Scorpion’s metal grip module weighs 3.2 ounces more than the similar-sized Sig P320–M18. Other Sig P320 AXG Scorpion features include custom Hogue G10 Piranha rear grip panels/rear strap, FDE Cerakote finishing, X-Series flat skeleton trigger and XRay3 day/night sight with U-notch rear. X-Series Optic ready slide compatible with Sig Romeo 1PRO and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro red-dots. It is a sign of times that the Sig P320 Scorpion can mount a red-dot optical. Red-dot is rapidly spreading to everyday personal defense weapons as well as law enforcement weapons.
Rendezvous Find
The Sig P320 AXG Scorpion, which was one of the major reveals at last September’s Athlon Rendezvous in Idaho, was one of the biggest. Sig Sauer manufactures its own ammunition so they were able to procure a large supply of 9mm ammunition for the Athlon Rendezvous event. Its ergonomics have always been a draw for admirers of the P320. Many people love the grip angle, which many believe gives them a more natural point of aim than other competitors. Sig kept the grip angle with AXG Scorpion’s alloy frame module. They instead focused on other tweaks like the Sig X-Series straight trigger and beveled four-sided interior magazine well, undercut triggerguard and sights.
The alloy frame’s 3.2 ounce weight difference creates a unique, positive ergonomic feeling that will appeal to many. What could be better than a reliable striker-fired handgun that exudes the classic metal feel in your hands? It’s not much. Positive signals were sent to my right side by the AXG Scorpion’s generous undercuts and extended beavertails.
No Queen Safe
With nearly 200 rounds of AXG Scorpion fire in Idaho, and the line behind me wanting their turn, I was quick to request a P320 AXG Scorpion to get a deeper experience. It is the best way to understand or appreciate a product. The Sig P320 AXG Scorpion did not have any malfunctions. 500 rounds were fired during range visits at Echo Valley Training Center (EVTC). We used Sig ammunition to keep the T&E an all Sig event. The range of loads fired was 115 to 147 grains, depending on the type of hollow points or FMJ bullets used.
The P320 AXG Scorpion was tested by shooting a course for a LE competition at EVTC. Multiple targets are engaged from three positions, with mandatory magazine changes between firing positions. This provides a benchmark for accuracy and time by allowing you to compare it with the average times of competitors using different weapons. The Sig P320 Scorpion performed well even under the induced stress of engaging multiple targets and drawing against a timer.
Multiple scenarios include moving and shooting, engaging multiple targets behind bars while switching magazines, working inside/around vehicles, and running steel plates at every range possible–10 yards to 80 yards–all of which left no doubt about the P320 AXG Scorpion’s potential. The solid sight picture provided by the Sig Sauer XRay3 night/day sights is excellent in any light condition. These sights are also capable of providing accurate distance stand-and-deliver accuracy. The P320 AXG Scorpion inspires confidence by stacking hits on targets that leave jagged holes.
How to Break It Down
The trigger pull of the Sig P320 AXG Scorpion is approximately 6 pounds. The Sig X Series straight trigger has a 90-degree break. This allows for better geometry and less tendency to pull sights to the left or right. The P320 AXG Scorpion’s trigger pull is the same every time. The Scorpion’s trigger is a great asset because of its consistency. Anyone who is familiar with it will be happy.
The Sig modifications for the P320 AXG Scorpion revolve around improving the handgun’s interaction and accuracy with the user. This includes the ability to place multiple rounds on target efficiently, accurately, and reliably. This gives you a tactical advantage. The P320 AXG Scorpion is able to instantly detect Sig Sauers’ attention for detail. Handgun and shooter seamlessly communicate crucial items like grip texture, trigger, and getting the hand as close to the bore axis possible. Sig engineers have years of experience and can take the elusive concept of “feel” to make a pistol that shoots well right out of the box.
The Sig P320’s success is due to its simplicity, high cartridge capacity and size ratio, and unwavering reliability. Simplicity shouldn’t be confused with lack of refinement. If the Sig Sauer P320 AXG Scorpion does not live up to the high standards Sig Sauer is known for, then its features are meaningless. Any end user who is trying to find a handgun should have the same dream: a gun that can do every job with equal ease. This is what the Sig Sauer P320 AXG Scorpion achieves.
