September 21st 2021 – A legend in the shooting world has passed. We are all now diminished. Walt Berger died on September 19, 2021. Walt Berger, a great innovator, a great competitor in benchrest (with many Hall of Fame Points), and a great friend of many shooters, will be greatly missed. Berger Bullets made the following announcement yesterday: “It is with deepest regrets that I announce the death of Walter Berger, founder of Berger Bullets & Ammunition. Walt, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 19th, 2021. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Walt lived by the words, “If a job is worth doing, it’s worthwhile doing right”. It was evident in the way he treated his family and friends, and in his influence on the shooting industry. David Hamilton, Walt’s grandson, is the Plant Manager at the Berger manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona. He continues Walt’s legacy of quality and dedication. Our mission is to ensure that Berger products continue to be something Walt would be proud to own. We follow Walt’s business principles and philosophies. We are proud to have been able to honor his life and to follow his example. Walt was a remarkable man who loved benchrest shooting. He was still competing at the age of 90+. Here he is at the Cactus Classic, Arizona in 2016.
Many Forum members and readers knew Walt and were able to shoot matches with him over the years. Here are some expressions of sadness about his passing: “Great man. He had a long career, and touched many people.” Boyd Allen “A true gentleman, always willing to help anyone who needed it.” I am blessed to have known him for many years. RIP my dear friend. Bill Shehane: “Now there’s a man for you! I can recall calling Eunice and him back in the 80s to order some of their benchrest bullets. His family may God bless them. Walt, thank you for the great bullets. I’ve seen them do some incredible things. Don Mild: “Walt was an icon in accurate shooting for many years. A gentleman in the game who traveled all over the world, including Australia. He will be greatly missed. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. Rest assured, Walt and other men like him aren’t forgotten. Thank you Walt for all your help. Your Australian friends will never forget about you. Brad Ward: “My prayers go out to Stacey, Eric and David.”
Walt was a truly exceptional man and friend.” Nancy Tompkins: “He was a Man of Legend.” And Legends live forever.” Ivan Lukashevych Walt, 2015, at the dedication of Ben Avery’s 100/200 yard range.
About Walt Berger Bullets
Walt Berger was a competitive benchrest shooter for most of his adult years. Walt realized that the bullets that he could buy off the shelf were not up to his standards and decided to make his own precision bullets. Walt began making his own bullets, and won competitions. He eventually earned his place in The Benchrest Shooters Hall of Fame. His success inspired other benchrest shooters to ask him to make their bullets. After many years of making bullets in his garage, Walt’s wife Eunice, who was also a legend at benchrest competition, encouraged Walt to start a business. Together, they built Berger into a large-scale precision ammunition operation that is highly skilled and has high quality standards.
