The Ulticlip was one of the first clips to be introduced with the intention to use a holster without a belt. Holster hardware was very poor at the time. The Ulticlip was a blessing. Discreet Carry Concepts did the same thing, but in a completely different way. Today we will compare Discreet Carry Concepts vs. Ulticlip in order to determine which holster clip is best for you. Each clip has its pros and cons. There are situations where one clip is better than the others. While there is no one-size fits all solution, we have found that one clip works better in most situations. We’ll discuss that at the end. Ulticlip The Ulticlip’s locking clasp allows users to secure the clip to their clothing or whatever clip is being held to. This is a standard design for all Ulticlips. Although the clasp design has changed over time, the basic design is the same. This clasp can be considered a weakness in the design and must be removed to remove the clip. Ulticlip has made improvements to the design over time, with older versions of the Ulticlip (e.g. The clasps of the original Ulticlip (and Ulticlip 3) were sometimes difficult to undo. Clients have told me that Ulticlips could become loose when they enter their cars. The clasp would catch on the steering wheel and then when they sat down it would fall out. The clasp has been rounded and made less prominent in the updated versions. Ulticlip 3 The Ulticlip 3 looks just like a regular Ulticlip, but has slots at the bottom for mounting. The original Ulticlip only had a one-hole system for mounting, which was not very useful for most things. The clip was attached to the holster only by the hole at the bottom. The basic Ulticlip can spin if it isn’t tight enough. However, the 3 with the slots allows for two to three mounting screws in the Ulticlip. Because of their position, the slots can be used with many Ulticlip holsters or knife sheaths. The Ulticlip 3 was first Ulticlip holster clip to work with a Kydex. It is important to have two mounting points for your Ulticlip Holster. As I mentioned, the Ulticlip was prone to easily being undone if it hit something at the right angle. Although this was a major design flaw of the Ulticlip 3, it was still better than any other available option at the time. Discreet carry concepts didn’t exist, nor did the new Ulticlips we’re about. Ulticlip The Ulticlip 3 is identical to the Ulticlip 3. However, it has one mounting hole at its bottom, as we mentioned earlier. There is nothing more to be said about this. Ulticlip 3 XL I consider the Ulticlip 3 a light-duty solution. It wasn’t the most durable clip on the market and it didn’t feel durable. Ulticlip introduced the Ulticlip XL to improve the durability and performance of the 3. This clip is significantly larger and serves a different purpose than the regular Ulticlips. The Ulticlip 3 can only be attached to clothing. The clip wouldn’t work well if it was attached to a belt. This was because the clip was too short to conceal. The clip was great for certain purposes, but it was not suitable for concealed carry. A belt is a great support for firearm carry. If you don’t have the ability attach your Ulticlip to a buckle, you will be better off with a different clip. The Ulticlip XL was born from this realization. Belt The Ulticlip XL’s clasp is longer and can be worn over a 1.5-inch belt. It is extremely durable. The edges of the clasp are also rounded, so that it won’t come undone easily like its predecessors. The XL has slots and holes at the back, just like the Ulticlip 3. This allows it to mount to a variety positions in the holster. The Ulticlip XL isn’t something I use. It’s heavy and bulky, so it wouldn’t be a good choice for concealed carry. This will be covered in the Ulticlip vs. DCC comparison. I find the XL bulky and don’t see how it can replace existing clips. It doesn’t seem as important to be able to mount an Ulticlip on a belt, especially when Soft Loops are just as secure and less visible. There may be niche applications for the Ulticlip XL I am not seeing. It could be similar in nature to the ones I’m going to mention. Ulticlip XL is a great choice if you need a secure, stiff mount for your purse or bag. Ulticlip Slim
The Ulticlip Slim combined some of the XL’s features with the 3 models to create one sleek, cohesive piece. Although it looks more like the Ulticlip 3 than its XL counterpart, there are many improvements over the original. The Ulticlip Slim features two mounting slots at the bottom and rounded sides. This rounding makes the clip appear less sharp. The angles of the locking clasp are also improved. Although there is no rounding, it is much lower-profile and less likely to strike something or disengage. Although they did a good job with the design, there is one problem. The clip measures approximately three-eighths inch from the back to the clasp. Although it may not seem like much, it is quite sufficient for concealed carry. The Slim is what I use when concealing a small gun inside a cowboy boot. This clip is the only one that I’ve found that will stick well to this boot. The Ulticlip 3 is an option, but it has a good chance of coming undone when you pull on your jeans to draw. This issue has not been an issue with the Ulticlip Slim. Unfortunately, they don’t make a Ulticlip XL with a slimmer profile for this purpose. The Ulticlip XL measures approximately a half inch from the back of its clip to the clasp’s front. It’s impossible to conceal this much. Discreet Carrier Concepts The Discreet Carrier Concepts clips are very low-profile and use an entirely different locking mechanism than the Ulticlip. They don’t lock at all. These clips are made from heat-treated spring steel by Discreet Carry Concepts. This allows them to retain a lot more holding force. These clips will hold clothing better than any competitor’s clip, even though they don’t have an electronic locking mechanism like its competitor. Leather is the only area they have not performed as well. Because they are less prominent, I wish the Discreet Carry Concepts clips could be used on cowboy boots to hold a knife and a gun holster. Unfortunately, this type of force doesn’t work well for that application. The Discreet Carry Concepts clips feature a small tooth cloth-grabber at its bottom that really digs into your clothes and prevents the clip becoming undone. These clips can be difficult to remove at first. These clips are not difficult to remove if you have the right technique. Profile The smallest Ulticlip measures around three-eighths an inch thick, while the Discreet Carry Concepts clips measure around three-sixteenths. If you plan to mount them over a belt, the DCC clips will work better. Discreet Carry Concepts offers both short and longer clips. The longer clips can be worn over a belt while the shorter clips can be worn under or over a belt. Both DCC clips can be worn without a belt. However, the shorter ones will fit under a shirttail or similar. The Discreet Carry Concepts clip will work better inside the waistband (IWB), and in almost every other field. The Ulticlip is great for carrying the body around in a bag or backpack. The Ulticlip is the best choice if you want to mount a holster/sheath in a boot. Ulticlip Pros – Works better with thick solid materials such as leather Many mounting options. Cons Bulkier Locking clasp DCC. Pros – Perfect for fabrics Low profile Lots of mounting possibilities. Cons – Doesn’t hold up as well to leather. We would love to hear your comments in the comments section below. Harry’s Holsters first published the post Discreet Carry Concepts vs Ulticlip.
