October 10, 2021 SunDay GunDay Queen of 2 Miles Lindsey Paul — –.375 CheyTac hail to the Queen — Lindsey Paul, the new Queen Of 2 Miles. This lady can shoot! The talented Texan defeated a large field, including many past KO2M Champion, all men. Lindsey deserves our congratulations for her remarkable performance. She had 3 hits in 5 shots at 2.0 miles (3520 meters). No competitor had more than one hit from 3520 yards. Only four other finalists had even one hit at that distance. Lindsey was using an Alamo Precision rifles.375 CheyTac loaded with Cutting Edge 400gr solid ammunition in Peterson brass. Lindsey is shooting her KO2M-winning.375 CheyTac rifle. It packs a punch, even with the big muzzle brake. Side note: This talented lady won the title using a borrowed bipod. Lindsey said that she didn’t have the Accu-Tac Bipod she used in the match because it had been borrowed. I have one from them, but it hasn’t arrived yet. It was a big surprise to me to win the K02M title. I didn’t feel confident going into this match. My barrel has been acting strangely. For example, it seemed to have lost speed after I cleaned it in the last match. It went from 2985 to 2955 fps. This is my first ELR gun, and I didn’t realize how important it was to keep track of my round count. Although I don’t know when the barrel will stop working, I had been thinking for the past few months that it would. I panicked and added powder to get it back to the middle of where my node was. I also adjusted my seating depth to make it shoot at a moderately high level. Day one went very well. I wanted to finish the match in third place, so that was my goal. I wasn’t nervous about shooting, but I was more anxious about spotting my team-mate Robert Waggoner. I was able to hit the Cold Bore target at 1572 meters and had a great run thereafter. Although I was disappointed that I didn’t get one more hit, I was still 4th at the day’s conclusion. Day two was nerve-racking. Robert had to spot me and this is something I have always struggled with. I have spent a lot of time this year on the spotter, trying to improve my skills and make quick, accurate calls on misses. Robert cleaned Target 1 and I was confident that we would have a great run. Target 2 was his worst, but he finally made an impact and we moved on to Target 3. This is probably the most proud thing about the match. I saw the mistake and made a good call. He realized that he had not written down his Target 3 dope and was now using Target 4 dope! He was back on target and made a Target 4 first round impact. We will both be checking each others’ dope from now on. Lesson learned! Three consecutive hits at 2 miles secure victory
I was 9th in the finals, nearly 18,000 points behind Ryan Cheney. My goal was to finish in Top Ten. Ryan did a solid final round, with only one impact on the 2-mile goal. Few believed that Ryan’s score was possible. I finished 12th in the order. I was worried about the conditions, but they turned out great. Target 2 finally began to emerge from the shadows, and the wind wasn’t doing its usual, switchy stuff. Robert did an excellent job as my spotter (see the photo above). I couldn’t have asked for a better set for calling wind and spotting misses. I made three consecutive impacts on Two Mile Target to earn enough points for Ryan to surpass me and give me the highest total match point total. Editor: Lindsey won the 3520-yard final distance. I should mention the importance to get a Personal Drag Model (PDM) from Applied Ballistics. They are willing to travel with their mobile lab all over the country and provide PDMs for free. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of it! It’s not a plug-and-play system. I had to adjust my velocity, but once I did that I was able to accurately target the 3520 yard target with half the accuracy. The loading process for the large caliber is the same as any other. Quality components and dies are key. The Cutting Edge Lazers are a reliable and long-lasting product. They are very reliable. We have found that the biggest problem with these large cartridges is finding a load which is both accurate and has good SD/ES numbers. It seems that when the cartridge shoots one hole, the SD is more than 10 FPS. When the SD is very high, it shoots a large group. Q & A with Queen 2 Miles Lindsey. Q: How satisfying was winning the match, being awarded the KO2M crown and being seated in the champion’s seat? Lindsey: I try to be grounded and humble. We put aside all other things and focused on ELR this year. This win is a great result because all our hard work paid off. I’m also happy with how I’ve developed as a spotter. No one wants to be the weakest half of a team. Q: What training methods do you use for Extreme Long Range? Lindsey says we don’t have access to long ranges often enough to train. This year, a 2000-yard range was closed near us. It was very disappointing. Two weeks before the match, we had a training day to confirm our dope and I’m glad that we did. I felt confident at 2 miles that day because of that. Q: What special mental preparation do you use before shooting? Lindsey said that I did something different before the final round. It seemed to work. I sat in my truck and listened to the Rocky theme music. This helped me visualize the entire sequence of shots, with transitions and each shot making an impact. I did this with my high school track coach. It was kind of silly, but it worked. Q: How has law enforcement helped you be a better competitor/shooter? Lindsey says that I find it easy stay calm under pressure. Although I can still get agitated when things aren’t going my way, I tend to stay focused. [Editor] Lindsey is an officer in Texas’ law enforcement who has served both regular duties and mounted (horseback patrols). Q: What tips would you give to other ELR shooters? Lindsey: Stop trying to be fast! These big guns conceal pressure well, so you don’t have to run on the edge of pressure to get results. We learned this the easy way by destroying brass. I fear someone will learn it the hard and catastrophic way. Q: What advice would you give to women who want to be involved in ELR? Lindsey: Get a nice,.22LR (such a Bergara), and extend it out to 300-400 meters. It’s a great way to learn wind calls and it can be used to test your shooting skills. You only need to find the right factory rimfire ammunition for your gun. This way, you don’t have to wait for the “rabbit hole”, which is reloading. Lindsey with her Alamo Precision Rifles team-mates K02M. As a child, I was interested in shooting sports. My father was a Sheriff’s deputy so he taught me how to shoot from a young age. I was a handgun shooter growing up. Hunting is my true passion so I decided to shoot competitively to improve my rifle skills, and to become a better hunter. We also shoot.22 LR matches and a 500-yard prone centerfire match. I hope to make it to a few NRL Hunter matches next season. The Nightforce Steel Challenge is also on the horizon. My original intention was to use my ELR gun to shoot rocks on cliff faces. However, I became hooked after trying it out. My police training has helped me to stay calm. I’ve been through enough chaos in real life and serious situations to know that a match is just that, a competition. If I have a bad day, there will be another match. This has been an exciting year for me. We started at Clark’s Knob match, and discovered that our equipment was not up to the extreme distances. We regrouped and made some improvements. I broke the FCSA Cold Bore World Record with three consecutive shots at 2464 meters at the Spring Canyon match in Aug 2021. I’ve also had solid finishes at matches we’ve attended. Lindsey is a top talent within the ELR field. In August 2021, she set a new FCSA Cold Bore World Record of 1.5 miles (2464 yard). If I had to start again, I would not change anything except for investing in a better-quality scope sooner. I am stubborn so I used an Athlon Ares ETR scope the first couple years. I insisted that it was fine because it fit within my budget. Robert convinced me to borrow the Nightforce ATACR before I went to Spring Canyon. It was a better scope and a more reliable system.
